Quarterback Alexander Webb

Postby ponyboy » Tue Apr 27, 2004 11:01 am

With apologies to hpfan, let's assume Alexander Webb's indeed transferring. What would this mean?

Well, he'd have three years of eligibility and could play 2005-2007. Webb is a dual threat guy with a good arm. He's a quick learner and hard working kind of guy who turns 21 next month, so he'd have the mental maturity as a 22 year old sophomore in 2005.

Phillips will be a junior in '05. Meeks will be a redshirt sophomore. And the two JC guys will be seniors.

Thoughts about how this guy might fit in?

ponyboy The facts as I see them, Alexander would have the most experience with the current offense. Most important --- the team will have a full complement of QB thoroughbreds loaded in the corral for the first time in a long time. They can all work to make eachother and the team better. The chances of a near term recovery look better all the time. If Webb was to play out his full eligibility he would be attending graduate school at SMU before he left.

I would agree, we are a little heavy at qb if this happens. Webb is good and will be ready to play in '05. Eckert didnt come here to sit either. And Phillips has monster potential. Its a good problem to have. Not to mention Romo and Meeks. QB should no longer be our problem by 2005. In fact, I'd say we can get aggressive with Phillips running the ball because of depth. My personal depth chart:

Year-Starter-Backup

2004-Phillips(SO)-Eckert(JR)
2005-Phillips(JR)-Webb(SO)
2006-Phillips(SR)-Webb(JR)
2007-Webb(SR)-Meeks(SR)

You may want to revise your plans for 2007. Webb has 3 years left, and he's already used his redshirt. Contrary to popular belief, he doesnt get another one while he's sitting out his transfer year.

That 3 playing years left, right Prof? He's got to sit out 2004, so that would leave 2005, 2006 and 2007.

oh well, who cares about 2007 anyway. If this program doesnt get on track before then, we got bigger problems. Pencil in Meeks for the 2007 qb just for the hell of it.

PB, I think he is saying that if you burn a redshirt year, you don't get another one when you have to sit out your transfer year between D-1 schools. Basically, you lose a year unless you go D-2 or something. I didnt know that Webb had already redshirted, I thought he played as a freshman, but lost track.

No, its 3 years. If he stays where he is, or goes to a 1-AA school and doesnt have to sit out, then he can play 3 years. If he goes to a 1-A school he sits out a year and can play 2. The only way he could play beyond that would be to get injured again and get a hardship year, but that would still only be 2 actual playing seasons, because the injury would have to be severe enough to cost him most of a season. The year that he sits out is lost, and there isnt any way around that.

Actually, I think he was granted a medical hardship year at Northwestern, which is somehow different from a redshirt year. So if that's true, he could still burn his redshirt year when sitting out as a transfer.

I think Prof X, myself and a few others are the only ones that understand the Webb situation. If he transfers to SMU he will only have two years left after he sits out the 2004 season. It is not possible to get a redshirt season after you get a medical hardship. If he did redshirt that could be a season that counts against him
