Sperry rolls Wright way
SPERRY -- After pausing in a moment of silence for Sperry native Brian Moss, still unaccounted for in the disaster at the Pentagon, and all the victims in the terrorist attacks on Tuesday, Sperry's football team turned Colby Wright loose.
Wright rushed for 334 yards on 33 carries and four touchdowns Saturday night to propel the host Pirates (2-1) to an emotional 35-28 overtime win.
"This was homecoming for us," said Sperry superintendent Jerry Burd, "and we felt it was important for our kids to get back to doing something other than watching television."
Wright's fourth touchdown of the night, a 10-yard scamper, came on the first play of overtime. Sperry's defense held Haskell (2-1) to seven yards in overtime and, when Greg Giles' fourth-down pass for Chad Sanders fell incomplete in the end zone, Sperry's bench and stands erupted.
"(Colby) is a workhorse and the guys up front (offensive line) did a great job," said Sperry head coach Robert Park. "All week we've been dragging and waiting for something to celebrate. We had something tonight."
In a contest expected to be a rushing showdown between two of the state's leading running attacks, the game lived up to its billing. Both teams kept the ball on the ground during the majority of the game, with Wright doing the damage for Sperry and Haskell's three-pronged rushing attack of Tyler Johnson, Steven Harris and David Ragsdale racking up 213 yards.
Wright had a tremendous first quarter, accounting for 113 yards on nine carries. But Sperry was unable to capitalize on two possessions inside the Haskell 20, fumbling once and missing on a 33-yard field goal.
Wright's bullish running finally paid off in the second quarter. After getting the ball at its own 49, Sperry called Wright's number on six plays of the seven-play drive. His 7-yard touchdown burst gave Sperry the early 7-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Haymakers to respond. Gile found a wide-open Raef Perryman for a 43-yard touchdown pass and Johnson scored on a 4-yard run to give the visitors a 14-7 lead.
Sperry tied it when Wright scored on a fourth-down, 4-yard run with 1:48 remaining to cap a 200-yard first half for the senior.
The teams traded scores in the second half, with Haskell taking a 28-20 lead early in the fourth quarter on Giles' 1-yard run. Wright's 14-yard burst and conversion run tied it on Sperry's next possession with 5:05 left in regulation.

Did he actually show up, as forecast? Anybody see him? How big is he? Sperry is an Oklahoma 3A school. What are the enrollment limits for Oklahoma 3A?

Can anyone name other recruits who were at the game?
