I have the entire game on tape. Guess I should have it converted to digital and uploaded. Also '80 in Austin, etc.

Still remember that beautiful day in Austin. Sun was shining and God loved us that day.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Nothing looks more manly than pre-facemask football. How did any of these men finish their career with noses and teeth left ?

Because they knew how to tackle without having that happen. That is why I advocate going without helmets if they are serious about stopping concussions. People would learn quickly how not to use their heads as weapons.

How did they prevent others from simply spearing the crown of the helmet into the other guy's face?

People just did not do that. I grew up playing tackle football with no pads. Most kids did. I never got hurt. At SMU I was knocked unconscious at least weekly. We never checked for concussions. I would bet I had over a dozen while I was there.

And yes, get all the "so that is what happened" comments out of the way.

Watch rugby players. A few noses out of whack here and there and lots of shoulder issues, but almost no serious head trauma. Amazing. Gumbel has been saying take off the face mask for years.

Back in the day, you learned that tackling was about wrapping the ball carrier's legs up. I think today's "blow 'em up" hits really got started with the advent of ESPN and "highlight hits". Anyone remember when Jack Tatum was considered a "dirty player" because he hit that way? Of course, there have always been blow em up hits. Speaking of head injuries/concussions, what ever happened to Robert "Crash" Popelka?

I saw Pop-a-Lick at the Lettermans bash a couple of years ago. Looks better than I do if that is possible. His son has posted on here a few times.
