Does bigger mean better?

Postby Hoofprint » Wed May 15, 2002 5:44 pm

More and more high school offensive linemen look like they already have NFL bodies. But can they play? Here's some big prospects.

Daniel Chavez, 6-5, 290, 5.1, El Paso Del Valle
Brandon Tittle, 6-8, 360, 5.7, Fort Worth Richland
John Mahaffey, 6-5, 310, 5.3, Tyler Lee
Derek Forney, 6-5, 325, 5.3, The Woodlands
Robert Felton, 6-4, 320, 5.5, Cy-Creek
Edwin Harrison, 6-5, 310, 5.1, Houston Westbury
Shannon Boatman, 6-7, 290, 5.3, Beaumont Westbrook
Lucius Alexander, 6-8, 330, 5.7, Austin LBJ
Jorrie Adams, 6-6, 285, 4.9, Jasper (too light to be called really huge, but a great player)
Kyle Thornton, 6-4, 300, 5.0, Dallas St. Marks
Kharylake Martin, 6-5, 340, 5.4, Dayton
Cody Wallace, 6-5, 295, 5.1, Cuero
Duston Moore, 6-4, 340, 5.3, Brenham
Devarius Jackson, 6-5, 330, 5.4, Killeen Harker Heights
Corey Clark, 6-5, 310, 5.3, Smithson Valley

Coach Bennett always says he values quickness over size. So you can scratch Brandon Tittle and Lucious Alexander off that list. Or at least off the list of players SMU will recruit. He wants his guys big, but not if they're slow. And those guys are slow.

I wonder if Randy Denman can help convince Kharylake Martin to come to SMU. That kid is huge.

When Coach Bennett was talking about his first recruiting class, he said he wasn't "in to fat kids". But if they have mobility and footwork and strength and technique, big beats small every time at the line of scrimmage.
