Grapevine's Richard Bartel, who signed with SMU as a quarterback prospect, was drafted (as a pitcher) Tuesday in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.

Also, two top UTexas recruits were drafted. Wide receiver/defensive back/athlete Quan Crosby was taken as an outfielder by the Anaheim Angels in the sixth round. And prized running back prospect Cedric Benson was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round.

17th round is generally raw potential, at most a 10,000 bonus. A friend of mine was taken in the 12th round at had a signing bonus of 12,500. I doubt 10,000 and cheap bus rides in appalachia will make Bartel leave the Hilltop.
