Oklahoma inroads?

Postby Stampede » Wed Jul 04, 2001 12:56 pm

Granted OU will get pretty much who they want but, SMU seems to be making inroads in the fine state of Oklahoma for some good athletes. Basketball signed one of the state's top players last year in Eric Castro and it appears football is doing getting good response as well.

There was an SMU presence up here in recruiting last year. Don't think we signed anyone from Oklahoma (am I wrong about that?), but the coaches were more visible at HS games than they were in years past, and when I read comments from players who were being recruited, it seemed like more and more of them were at least considering SMU. So they're making some in-roads up here, which is good, because there are some stout young men ready to get a great education and play some great college football. They need to keep tapping into the Oklahoma mines.

You are correct RRP. No one was signed from Oklahoma last year. I agree we need to continue/increase our efforts there.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Well, we did sign two from Florida this year and we are probably looking to get more, but from the stand point of squeezing the most out of our puny recruiting budget...it makes sense to fish in the closer ponds than running all over the country. If we can start WINNING and increasing our fan (read financial) base, then we will be able to fish in more and bigger ponds.

You're right Tailwind...I missed Dineen because of the way they had his hometown listed. "Florida" was easy to miss. Thanks for the correction.
