Jason's Look at SMU's recruiting needs...

Postby JasonB » Thu Dec 20, 2001 9:27 pm

So, since it is nearing the holidays, I decided I didnt feel like working and took a look at the SMU roster, in order to try and size up our needs on a position by position basis:

- QB: we have 4 returning, lose none this year, will lose one next year. So picking up one would be nice, but not necessary.

- WR: we have 10 returning. One leaves. 4 are leaving next year. Picking up a good one this year would be nice so that we are prepared for next year's exodus.

- TE: we have 6 returning. Quality here is low except for hampton, I think. One is leaving, and next year hampton leaves. However, in the new spread offense, TE is not a priority. So I dont think we will recruit this hard.

- RB: We have 6 and all are pretty good. One is leaving this year, and briggs leaves next year. So we only need one recruit.

- OG: We have three, two more are leaving this year. We need at least two recruits here.

- OT: We have 4 staying, three are leaving, one is leaving next year. So we need to pick up two or three.

- C: we have two. Another is leaving. One leaves next year. We need a pickup here. Or two.

- DT: we have 5, one is leaving, 4 leave next year. So we need 2 here (it is a week point where depth is concerned) at least.

- DE: We have 5, 2 leave this year, two leave next year. We need two.

- LB: we have 8, which I think is a small number to start with. Two leave this year, 5 leave next year! We need to have two at least this year!

- Safety: We have 8. Two leave this year, none next year. I think we are set at safety.

- Cornerback - We have 5, three leave next year. We need a good pickup here this year.

- Punter and kicker, we have one staying at each position. We might pick up one as compitition, but not a priority.

------------
That said, I pickout 14 must scholorships: wr, te, rb, 2 OG, 2 OT, 1 C, 1 DT, 2 DE, 2 LB, 1 CB. Bennett said we will have 19 total, so that leaves five extras, which I would preferably choose as a OT, DT, QB, OG, and 1 DT/DE (best available).

Here is how our current recruits fit into the required list:
WR: James Elliott
RB: Barnett
OG: Morton, Poulos (not listed on this board, but is listed on Rivals!!!)
DT: Billups
CB: Cox
OT: One of two slots taken by Urbanus
LB: One of two slots taken by Carrington
TE: None
C: None
DE: None

Of the extra preferable positions:
OT - Guidry
DT: Likio
QB: Gilroy
OG: Benson
DT/DE: Denman

Picking up Gilmore as a safety to me Means we will not recruit a TE. Picking up Cherry as another DT means we probably will only recruit one DE.

So, therefore, my list of leftover slots (19 possible, 15 are taken, combining the rivals list with this one):
OT
C
DE
LB

Unfortunately, that OT was going to be Schuster, and that DE was going to be Corey Ford Image. We dont have any one else lined up to recruit at OT. At DE we have aaron Scranton (out of georgia, may begone since cavan is out) and Brent Karrington (HP) on our list. At center, there is only one decent guy on our list that is left, and that is Resturn. At LB we dont have any once decent still on our list, so we are hurting there...

Any comments? Do you think Bennett will target these positions, or do you think he will just take the best 4 avaiable?

It was buried in my long post Image.

Also, digging deeper into the poulus kid, it looks like it was a misprint and that he actually committed to rice. So we can add another OT to our needs list.

From Rivals.com:

OG/OT
2 star rating, not ranked.
height 6-foot-3
weight 277 pounds
40-yard dash 5.1 seconds

College Choices SchoolInterest Offer
Southern Methodist COMMITTED Yes
Rice NONE Yes

Bio Notes and Stats: Poulos has been a leader for his high school offensive line since he was a sophomore. He has started 17 straight games entering his senior season.

Arlington, Texas offensive lineman Chris Poulos has committed to play for Rice and head coach Ken Hatfield.

"Rice was my favorite from the beginning because it is the best mix of academics and football in the country," Poulos said. "But SMU, Wisconsin, Kansas, Louisiana Tech and Tulane are in a heap at number two. I am very excited."

This week Chris received scholarship offers from Rice, Wyoming, Louisiana-Lafayette, West Point and SMU. Recruiters from other programs ( Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana Tech, Tulane) have promised Chris that they will also make formal offers later this week.

Poulos, a leader on the Arlington offensive line is the only returning ten game starter from last year's offensive line, a three year varsity letterman and has seventeen starts under his belt. He also holds the distinction as the highest graded lineman in the twenty years that they have graded linemen.
