Defensive Backs

Postby Recruiting Guru » Tue May 28, 2002 1:00 pm

Coach Bennett has made a living developing great defensive backs, and he has a pair of top corners to work with now in Kevin Garrett and Jonas Rutledge. But he's going to need more when KG graduates after this season and Jonas graduates after next season. There are some excellent prospects in Texas this year, including many in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

• Kenneth Thompson (5-10, 175, 4.4) Irving Nimitz
• Tarell Brown (5-10, 175, 4.5) North Mesquite - very similar player to Rutledge
• Ashton Youboty, 6-1, 180, 4.6, Klein - Big safety who will get bigger and stronger. Very hard hitter
• Syndric Steptoe, 5-10, 175, 4.5, Bryan
• Eric Mayes, 5-10, 170, 4.5, Humble - makes up for slender frame with superior footwork and technique
• Limus Sweed, 6-4, 190, 4.5, Brenham - Huge DB who could be a punishing safety or even bulk up to play linebacker. Big hitter who's fast enough to cover receivers one-on-one all over the field
• Tyrell Gatewood, 6-3, 185, 4.5, Tyler Chapel Hill - needs to add weight and strength, but similar player to Sweed
• Tony Cade, 6-2, 180, 4.4, Lewisville - tall and very fast. Athletic ability alone will get him recruited, technique will make him a prize among college coaches
• Derrick Carter, 5-11, 180, 4.5, Houston Madison
• Johnny White, 6-1, 180, 4.5, Pearland - the anchor of Pearland's secondary. Teams run and throw away from White
• Jacoby Hartley, 6-1, 181, 4.6, Midland Lee - experienced player from one of the state's top programs. Might be able to play as a true freshman
• Kelon Davis, 6-1, 185, 4.4, Austin Bowie - pure athlete who could play any of four positions in the secondary
• Cory Campbell, 5-11, 180, 4.5, Spring Westfield
• Bryan Davenport, 6-1, 175, 4.5, Carrollton R.L. Turner
• Terrance Wheatley, 5-11, 175, 4.5, Plano East
• Justin Sealy, 5-10, 180, 4.5, Plano West
• Kendrick Singleton, 6-2, 180, 4.5, Carrollton R.L. Turner - shutdown corner who takes away opponents top passing targets
• Courtney Fields, 6-2, 190, 4.4, Dallas Roosevelt - arguably the most gifted DB in DFW area
• Untwaun Johnson, 5-10, 160, 4.6, Crockett - quick, but small and thin. Needs to bulk up
• Lyterria Alford, 5-10, 170, 4.5, Houston Smiley - plays bigger than he is. Can contribute on special teams
• Kevin Fennell, 6-0, 175, 4.6, Hillsboro - tall CB who never gets turned around by WR fakes. Excellent footwork
• Chance Schmidt, 6-0, 175, 4.6, Sinton
• Tra Wilcox, 5-8, 155, 4.6, Cameron Yoe - good player, but very small, and doesn't have the blinding speed to compensate
• Stephen Wood, 5-10, 185, 4.6, Southlake Carroll
• Dominique Brooks, 6-2, 185, 4.5, North Mesquite - already being recruited by just about every school in the state and many outside the state
• Adrian Turner, 5-10, 185, 4.5, Terrell
• Sidney Miller, 5-10, 175, 4.5, Corpus Christi Miller
• Herb City, 6-0, 175, 4.5, Midland High - special teams monster can play safety or CB
• Ruben Madrid, 5-11, 190, 4.6, Marfa - thick DB who hits like a linebacker
• Lawaylon Battles, 6-0, 175, 4.54, Tyler Lee
• Jason Tomlinson, 6-1, 170, 4.6, Kennedale
• Diamond Byrd, 5-11, 175, 4.5, Fort Worth Dunbar
• Cory Campbell, 6-1, 190, 4.5, Spring Westfield
• Devin Johnson, 6-4, 190, 4.4, Amarillo Palo Duro - will be a recruiting target of every coach out there, based on his physical attributes alone. Very instinctive player
• Braelon Davis, 5-9, 170, 4.5, Dallas Carter
• Rashid Washington, 5-9, 180, 4.5, Denton Ryan
• Danny Cobbin, 5-9, 155, 4.4, Dallas Carter
• Taron Caldwell, 6-3, 180, 4.5, Fort Worth Dunbar - Looks like Shawn Williams, who has played the last few years for the NY Giants (he's a free agent.) Big player who hits like it
• Nick Fellows, 5-10, 170, 4.45, Dallas Skyline
• Calvin Brown, 6-1, 185, 4.5, Dallas Skyline - best prospect in strong Skyline secondary
• Brandon Harper, 5-11, 180, 4.5, Dallas Skyline
