Sleeper candidates?

Denton Ryan HS is getting a lot of pub this year because they're a really good team and because they have some top-tier prospects like QB James Battle and DE Jarvis Moss. But one guy who's not getting nearly the attention Battle and Moss are getting is WR William Dowdy, 6'5", 215. Dowdy is Battle's favorite target because he has deceptive speed and has the size to go over the middle and take the hits from safeties or linebackers. He also has exceptionally soft hands for a player of his size. He could be a big WR or move to TE in college.

Another player who the SMU coaches are high on is Ennis TE Ben Griffin (6'5", 270). Griffin has pretty good hands, but some see him as an offensive tackle in college. (But can you imagine playing defensive line against SMU and seeing this kid and DE/TE Darrin Johnson line up in a two-TE set on short-yardage plays? Would be like 7 offensive linemen.) He's remarkably lanky for someone carrying 270 pounds and could bulk up. And with his experience at tight end, he has the mobility and footspeed that would translate into an ideal tackle candidate. Coach Bennett has always said he wants linemen who can move, rather than someone who's just big, and Griffin moves extremely well for a big guy. Also, his recruiting skills indicate that he can use his hands, as opposed to some linemen who just stand up and punch straight forward. This is the kind of
kid who turns into a star at bigger schools that have the depth to allow him to develop. If we can get him and show some patience with him, he might be a good one. He's already a great blocker for a HS tight end, so the adjustment to tackle might not be as hard as it would for some.
