Mount Vernon QB has ace in the hole
While it wasn't the determining factor in his decision to orally commit to SMU in April, it doesn't hurt that Mount Vernon quarterback Ricky Joe Meeks will have an opportunity to play for the Mustangs' golf team.
Meeks said he would try to work golf around his spring football practice schedule. Meeks qualified for the UIL state tournament as a freshman and just missed qualifying the past two years.
However, football will be Meeks' priority. Through eight games, Meeks has completed 87 of 167 passes for 1,380 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Meeks was SMU coach Phil Bennett's first commitment after the Mustangs' spring game. Although the Mustangs have struggled this year, Meeks couldn't be firmer with his non-binding commitment.
"I know everything is kind of rough right now, but they need to start getting their personnel in there," Meeks said.
Since Meeks committed to SMU, eight others have joined him.
SMU was the first to offer Meeks a scholarship. Ole Miss and Alabama stopped recruiting him once he made his commitment but Tulsa and Georgia Tech have been in contact with him lately.
