I'm questioning why satellite camps are just now becoming a big thing. Or maybe they are because of all the publicity and they've been around

Because Saban made an big deal out of them and the SEC schools are not allowed to have satellite camps. Schools have been doing this for years.

they've been big for more than a decade-you're just hearing more about it because the NCAA has now allowed these camps out of state and farther from campus. SMU's camps under June Jones were very poorly attended-sometimes only a handful of real prospects showed up off campus. You've got to canvass and engage recruits to build the success of these camps for current AND future recruiting classes. Yesterday's camp was at Pearland (for Houston area recruits and today Lake Travis. Both these schools could win State Championships this year-so very strategic.

I agree Stallion. Very strategic. But before the NCAA ruling this year not to allow satellite camps Michigan was coming into SEC territory with camps and Saban pitched a fit about it and then NCAA ruled not to have them but the public outcry was heard by the NCAA because many players over the years were discovered by those camps. And as we know the NCAA reversed it decision this year a few months after it has ruled against them. Good for the NCAA. Houston camp was well attended as was the East Texas camp at Longview Pine Tree. Looking forward to seeing how the Lake Travis Camp goes.

I agree 100% with the SEC position. Its a ridiculous waste of money for all these schools to have cross-country camps. Its just another way for money rich schools to flush money down the tubes at academic institutions many of which are state funded. I think they should be restricted to about 250 miles away from campus and should be limited in number.

Saban's just mad because he can't have any camps. Some schools that are not located in California, Texas, and Florida make good use of these camps. Oregon, Oregon St, Washington etc go into California all the time and they are more than 250 miles away . Saban knows Harbaugh is coming after him. Illinois was at Lancaster yesterday and they had some smaller schools with them. It helps kids get opportunities the may not have had otherwise. That is why the NCAA reversed it's decision.

SMU Football Satellite Camps

Postby TidePony » Thu Jun 09, 2016 11:12 am

Harbaugh is about Harbaugh period, and these camps underscore it. He has zero championships, yet he attacks a coach with five.

Stallion is correct on the camp issue, and his distance rule is spot on. Harbaugh needs to focus on finding a way to beat Ohio State and Michigan State and stay out of the headlines. Saban couldn't care less about Harbaugh's verbal trash.

And, for the record, if Saban really wanted satellite camps he would have them, so would the rest of the SEC. It would simply take a conference call.

Apologies in advance to all of those I just offended, but you know I'm a dirty disgusting occasional Finebaum listening Bamer! But, a d*mn good Pony too!

Harbaugh knows he can beat Ohio St and MSU with SEC area athletes better than athletes in his area. Saban actually attacked Harbaugh first saying he could be violating the rules and Harbaugh just responded. Saban is a cry baby and should shut up about the issue. Saban says he is not a politician but then politics to have someone in the NCAA oversea satellite camps. Glad the NCAA reversed it's decision. NOW back to the SMU Camps.
