Could Charlie Brewer start as a True Freshman next season at SMU?

Seems like Coach Morris and Staff can use this as incentive to keep his commitment to SMU. Brewer definitely has an arm and some wheels. Looks much better than Ben Hicks. Brewer looks like he brings the threat of being able to run and create plays with his feet when necessary. I recognize his highlights are based on High School competition, but so is every other High School QB going to college. Not sure how his game will translate to college. Thoughts?

He can only be promised a chance to earn it. No guarantees in this game and the kid should know that.

I would hope we can redshirt him and have someone else like a transfer step up and lead the team.

The depth of talent in the program with the redshirts and next year's class has pushed it past the need to cater to individuals.

No shot in HECK.

1) Hicks improved significantly. Although not a great QB (yet), he is likely to benefit from another Spring Camp and his experience will be hard for a true freshman to top.
2) Peavy, by many accounts, has been lighting up our defense during the Fall. If healthy, he is likely to beat out any Freshman challenge and will likely start over Hicks.

I would like - and hope - Brewer redshirts. Every freshman needs to get stronger, and despite his familiarity with HCCM, he doesn't know the system. Got to think that Hicks and Peavy, at least, would be ahead of him, and maybe even Gillins, if we hang on to him (I read somewhere that he recently visited Ole Miss).

You never know who will get a late "great" offer and switch. For example, would Texas offer Charlie Brewer if they want Cade Brewer and somehow lose Ehlinger?

But, right now, our QB corps will likely be the best it has ever been post (and possibly pre)-DP.

Peavy, Hicks, Gillens, and Brewer (I don't think Davis will get his 6th year, but would be happy if he did) is solid top to bottom and the battle between Peavy, Hicks and Gilens in the Spring will almost certainly be a dogfight.

Ellenger has already signed a grant-in-aid with UT (but actually that is only binding on UT until he attends first class). Fact is Texas still needs one additional QB. It will be interesting to see the attention Brewer gets on the Big State Championship Stage this week.

I am a Texas grad and follow their recruiting in addition to SMU's. I think their 2nd QB is likely to be a transfer.

Hicks showed he could play. It's his until he loses it.
