Really important note about recruiting

With all of the GTs combined with Morris' previous recruiting, we currently have a situation where we have a good football team going into a coach's first year.

That hasn't happened since the death penalty.

Previously, our coaches had initial recruiting success by promising immediate playing time. Even Chad boosted early success by doing that.

What is exciting about what Dykes is doing right now in recruiting is that he is the first SMU head coach since the death penalty to have a successful recruiting class (so far) without being able to promise playing time.

In fact, one could argue that Jank is doing the same thing for the first time in forever in basketball as well.

This is a very important moment in the athletic evolution of SMU if Dykes can hold this class together and Jank can pull in a PG.

Has SMU Rivals gone out of business?

To the extent Rivals even has any more subscribers, it ought to offer each of them all a full refund and write each one an individualized note of apology.

They are becoming less important. 10 years ago, many coaches used them as an extension of their scouting network. 5 years ago, they were still leveraged as an important medium to get the word out about a program.

Today, universities have their own social media platform to get the word out about their programs. High schools and colleges have invested in analytics so that there is less of a need to leverage one of those sites to get scouting information. And the players themselves use social media to promote themselves rather than relying on the scouting services.

As a result, there is less demand from the colleges themselves. On the flip side, newspapers suck now, and don't give as much coverage to local teams. So, these sites fill that gap, and fans are willing to pay.

Just my opinion from what I see. But I think 247 is dominant, at least as far as SMU is concerned, so I would expect that the subscription base for Rivals has eroded quite a bit...
