Mays Announces Pair Of Standouts To Join Arkansas Player of the Year In Signing Class

DALLAS (SMU) – Reagan Bradley, who signed an NLI in November to play at SMU, was recently named Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas Preps Girls Basketball Player of the Year for 2019. The Little Rock Christian standout is joined in the 2019 signing class by guard Desirae Mathis and center Florence Tshimanga, head coach Travis Mays announced.

Led by Bradley, Little Rock Christian won its first state championship in 2019. Bradley was named state tournament MVP, scoring 10 points with five assists in the title game. She showcased her ability to score in the quarterfinal round, finishing with 34 points.

"Reagan is a key piece to continuing to build a championship culture with SMU women's basketball. Reagan is a leader and a proven winner. She is a true point guard that elevates the game of everyone around her," Mays explained. "Reagan impacts every area of the box score by utilizing her high basketball IQ and ability to score to make high level basketball decisions on the court. Reagan is also an elite on ball defender that will be an excellent addition to our team. We could not be more excited to sign Reagan and welcome her to the Mustang family!"

Bradley was a four-time all-state selection. A 5-8 guard, she averaged 15.2 points during her senior campaign, shooting 54.0 percent from the field after scoring 17.6 points with a 44.0 field goal percentage as a junior.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, opposing coaches describe Bradley as a player who does everything well. They said she not only hurts teams with her scoring, but also her defense, passing and rebounding.

"We are excited to add two tremendous guards to our roster for the 19-20 campaign," Mays stated. "Reagan Bradley and Desirae Mathis will give our team even more offensive weapons but they are also both excellent defenders. Reagan and Desirae bring a work ethic that will immediately enable them to compete for playing time."

Mathis, a 5-8 standout at University High School in Waco, averaged 15.5 points as a senior. She was named district MVP, selected to the all-district first team and earned academic all-district accolades. Mathis was an honor roll student all four years.

"Desirae Mathis is a scoring guard that has all the success habits that will make her a valuable addition to the SMU women's basketball program," Mays continued. "She is a leader on and off the court. Her multi-faceted skillset will make her an immediate impact player for our team. Her enthusiasm for the game is contagious and we are excited to welcome Desirae and her family to the Mustang family!"

Tshimanga, whose father played professional basketball in his native Democratic Republic of Congo, was a three-time all-star at the MacDuffie School in Massachusetts. A native of Montreal, the 6-3 center signed with Grand Canyon University, playing in eight games as a freshman during the 2017-18 season. She averaged 9.4 points with 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 blocks as a senior at the MacDuffie School, and graduated with maximum honors.

"Florence is an important addition to our roster. Her ability to run the floor and finish makes her a great fit for our conference. She is a strong physical presence in the paint that we are excited to add to our team," Mays stated. "Adding her to the roster will give us even more options inside. She is a leader who will impact SMU on and off the court. Her future is very bright. Her leadership in the locker room will make an immediate impact. She has an amazing story that will add grit to our team."

Mays has guided signees to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team each of the past two seasons. Ariana Whitfield was named to the team in 2018 after scoring 7.9 points with 65 assists. Kayla White led SMU with 11.4 points during the 2018-19 season, earning the postseason award.
