"There’s no question that SMU is thriving off their spectacular start to the 2019 season in addition to the addition of Rashaad Samples joining the coaching staff. The Mustangs are grabbing the attention of several notable prospects that used to be more inclined to look at Arkansas, Texas Tech or Kansas, but realize that they can stay in the Metroplex and play for a winning program right in their own backyard. Samples also plays a huge role. He was the architect of Texas’ success recruit Dallas-Fort Worth for the Longhorns, and a gig in his hometown is paying dividends, particularly with these 2021 targets.

It may sound surreal, but SMU is a legitimate player for five-star junior tackle Savion Byrd out of Duncanville. He could legitimately land in Dallas over Oklahoma, Texas or LSU, for example. Nussmeier is a high-profile quarterback that has visited SMU and is at least considering the Mustangs, which says a lot about the immediate impact that the Mustangs’ on-the-field success is having.

SMU has always recruited the Dallas area and parts of Texas well, but if this trend continues, I foresee a lot more three-stars and a few four-stars potentially giving further consideration in the 2021 class and beyond. They may not ultimately land with the Mustangs, but the fact that they’re finalists for Power 5 talent speaks volumes."
