SMU Defeats Green Bay With Defensive Gem

LAS VEGAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team put on a defensive clinic Saturday to defeat Green Bay 53-43 Saturday in its final game at the South Point Shootout. Sydne Wiggins was named to the all-tournament team with 16 points against the Phoenix after a career-high 26 points against Seattle.

The Mustangs (3-3) allowed just two field goals in the first quarter, jumping out to a 16-8 advantage they would never relinquish, leading wire-to-wire in the win. Green Bay (3-3) shot 14.3 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes as SMU forced five turnovers including three shot-clock violations.

On the other end of the floor, SMU shot 42.9 percent to double Green Bay's offensive output. While the two teams were separated by just two points over the final 30 minutes, the Mustangs did not lose a quarter during the contest.

Wiggins shot 5-for-11 from the field with four rebounds and three assists. Savannah Wilkinson's record-breaking double-double streak ended at five games as the London native finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Smith scored eight points with six rebounds and three assists, and Reagan Bradley totaled five assists and six points.

The Phoenix increased their shooting percentage to 50.0 percent in the second quarter, but SMU still only allowed four field goals while making five, including a pair from outside the arc. The Mustangs won the quarter, 13-12, taking a nine-point lead into the lockerroom, 29-20.

Each team managed just nine points in the third quarter, and SMU outscored Green Bay 15-14 over the final 10 minutes. The Mustangs finished the game with a 34.7 shooting percentage, while limiting the Phoenix to a 28.3 clip overall and 20.0 percent (5-of-25) from behind the arc. SMU went 5-for-15 from 3-point range, and went 14-for-19 at the free-throw line, 73.7 percent.

The Mustangs return home after three road games to host Oklahoma Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
