C-USA Game Nites

Postby Stallion » Thu Jan 20, 2005 3:57 pm

I noticed that C-USA appears to play its BB games on Tuesday/Wednesday or Saturday. Please tell me that we no longer will have to endure these silly Thursday Nite games played in the WAC. You want a major contributing reason for the attendance drop at SMU BB games. That's a factor.

I think Thursday is the single, best night for a basketball game personally. Tuesday and Wednesday are study nights. Thursday is a party night I agree, but a basketball game would be part of a party night if a winning product were involved. After all the party really doesn't start until after 9.

Students hardly show up anyway. I think Tues/Wed is better for alums and probably not as many distractions...just my take. Saturday is a bad night all the way around. Day games would probably work better I would think.

Start winning and maybe 10% of the 50,000+ DFW alums will come out regardless of the night. Bottome line, there is ZERO athletic pride in 99% of our alums....and you cant really blame them. Other than winning, that's a problem that wont go away.

Heck, 10% of 50k is 5,000 and I'd take that crowd. BTW, your percentages don't seem to add up, 99%+10%=109%. Unless you are suggesting that 9% of the folks with ZERO pride will put their feelings aside and show up along with the 1% who have pride to comprise the 10% who will show up if we start winning. Please clarify.

I’m saying that currently about 99% of local alums could care less if we're playing a home basketball game and it will stay that way until we start constantly winning. When and if that happens, I could see 10% (5000) of those alums showing up to watch home games. Otherwise, it will be the 1500 (1% or 1.5%) at our home games.

I know what you mean, man, I was just trying to be funny and it failed miserably. Happens a lot.

Still, if we started putting up some W's and got 4-5k per night it'd be a fun atmosphere.

Some people actually go to church on Wednesday as well.

Winning will increase the attendance, for sure.

But the Marketing of (all) SMU sports is lacking. When you're competing wih all the other "things to do" in DFW, it takes some creativity to put butts in seats.

When students won't walk across campus for a free game, you have more problems than W & L.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday? Who cares to the average student? I'd prefer Thursday games, but that's only because it's been like that for at least the last 5 years.

Wednesday IS church night and I know quite a few campus ministries meet on Tuesday sometimes.

Regardless, I still can't see how changing it from Thursday to Tuesday will not make that much of a difference. Winning? Yes! Tuesdays? No!
