The coaching carousel turning

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Apr 02, 2009 8:44 am

If you haven't heard:

USC coach Tim Floyd is going to Arizona.

Then Andy Katz said this:
USC may go after Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon.

If Dixon leaves, that would poise Pittsburgh to go after alum and Xavier coach Sean Miller.

He also brought up Tennessee's Bruce Pearl for Memphis.

Oh, and SMU still has Matt Doherty. Yippee!!

Arizona needing a coach the same time as Memphis really hurt the tigers since that is one of the top 5 dream jobs in the country.

Memphis may have to wait for the dominoes to quit falling to find someone unless they get Pearl from Rocky Top.

Floyd considering UA surprised me, especially after seeing a comment last night that UA was interested in OU's Capel.

I hope Floyd doesn't leave USC but Dixon (among others) would probably be a good replacement.

The story with Dixon is that his wife is a USC alum, so there's the attraction. Plus, he goes to Sunny/smoggy Southern California and gets to lock horns with his old boss Ben Howland at UCLA.

As for Capel, I guess they were talking extension. Wonder if UGA will make a run at him now that Anderson is off the table. Credit OU AD Joe Castiglione for identifying him when he was in the Colonial Athletic Association.

I even thought it was a reach. But it's turned out great for the Sooners.

Still, very few firings in this coaching carousel. I think the economy is clearly a factor.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

John Calipari 8 years/$31.65 million at Kentucky.
Mike Anderson got a raise to 1.5 million at Missouri. He was making $850K.
Tony Bennett is getting $1.7 million per and a $500,000 signing bonus.
Memphis reportedly came in higher than Kentucky with its counter.

I'm not totally disagreeing but this is a different market this offseason. The only move I could see is Oregon keeping Ernie Kent,

Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Virginia...

I guess you could argue coaches at DePaul and Oregon were spared due to economic conditions.

Apparently, Floyd turned down Arizona and will be staying at USC.

Nevada's Mark Fox is apparently the new coach at Georgia.

Apparently, the Scott Drew-Memphis talk is heating up.

Scott Drew? Well...Memphis used to be sort of the "Kings of the NIT"...might fit their persona? I hear Scott Drew is the quasi laughing stock among Big 12 coaches...
