Former Mustang Max Williams to TX Sports Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Max Williams, who will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of fame on Feb. 8 in Waco. He should have gone in some time ago.

Max, a member of the Big Country Hall of Fame, was an outstanding basketball player at Avoca, where he was an all-state player for three years. He led the team to the Class B state championship and a 44-1 record in 1955, scoring 1,264 points.

Max, who pioneered the behind-the-back dribble, went to SMU and was all-Southwest Conference in 1960. He was the third leading scorer in SMU history when he graduated.

Max is also called the founder of pro basketball in Texas. He helped organize the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball League and they later became the San Antonio Spurs.

One of the highlights of the Big Country Hall of Fame banquet is seeing Max. Ever since his induction he has returned. A class act.

Yep and Matt Williams his grandson the high scoring SMU signee from TCA , works for him now in the oil and gas business. Matt never got his game back after the anckle surgeries.

So if I visit the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, I should make sure to have a McDonald's burger wrapper, just to tuck into his plaque.
