Larry Brown?

There is definitely a "wow" factor there, and I loved him when he coached my sixers.

DO IT. Spend cash on getting great assistants to do recruiting. Larry would have us ready in 2 years. I know he is 71, but he would have us ready and would pave the way for the next great hire! Kansas Alums are praying he goes back to KU as an associate HC. DO IT.

It's worth a shot IMO. And we can get a HCIW a year before he gets ready to retire.

That would almost guarantee a PTI interview about SMU basketball.

Larry Brown would be a stupid hire, all in the name of making a splash. He's in his 70's and will simply not have what it takes to build a winner. This would be SMU's version of Georgia State hiring Bill Curry as its football coach. Go ask them how that is working out for them.

If SMU can't make a really good hire (ala Buzz), Orsini would be best served hiring Seth Greenberg, Blaine Taylor, or someone of that ilk. Someone who has been around, can build a solid foundation, and can win enough to have a fighting chance in the Big East.

I love Greenberg too. But I think if Brown is able to bring in top notch assistants, he'd turn it around fast. At 71 it isn't a long term hire, obviously, but I think it is a great short term fix.

Larry Brown would be a cute hire. It would grab some headlines. It will not help SMU make the jump to the Big East. Heck, the kids he'd be recruiting weren't even born the last time he was a college coach.

True, but all he has done is win. SMU = LA Clippers.
If he can take the Clippers to the playoffs, he can help SMU get respectable.

We are sooooooo far behind big east play it isn't even funny. He is not a long term fix, he is a short term fix.

Has a NBA championship ring with the Detroit Pistons, and a ncaa ring with the Kansas Jay hawks.

Coached 7 years in college, made it to the dance each year. Went to the finals, final four, and won a national championship.

In the pros he made the playoffs 22 out of 30 seasons.

Pay a chit ton of money for Assistants.

Hello - Marquette Poster here.

I think this sums it up - Brown provides visibility as you guys come into the Big East, but the only way this could happen is if he has someone he's grooming for the job. He's got two-three years tops, and then probably gone. Not a hire I'd make w/o having exceptional assistants coming as well.

I really like Marquette's Benford for SMU's HC. An exceptional recruiter, but an unknown quantity as a HC and working with a "rebuilding" program.

Horrible option. The guy is looking for a paycheck...this is along the same lines as a Doherty. Next...

Same lines as doh? Brown is a proven winner. Doh was not.

I admit the age is a problem, but I think there is tremendous upside.
