Mays Named Team MVP For Second Straight Season
Three repeat winners highlight list of award winners

April 15, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - Keena Mays was named team MVP for the second time at the SMU Women's Basketball Awards Banquet at the Crescent Club. The senior set a the SMU single-season record with 691 points this season, breaking head coach Rhonda Rompola's mark of 683 points during the 1981-82 season. She was an All-America finalist and first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection.

Mays averaged a league-leading 21.6 points per game, and shot a conference-high 39.6 percent on 3-point attempts, making a school-record 88 during the season. She also had 111 assists and 74 steals.

Mallory Singleton was selected by the coaching staff as the recipient of the Mustang Award, which is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of the women's basketball program, with character, effort and dedication, both on and off the court. The senior averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and routinely posted the team's highest GPA while earning degrees in accounting and economics.

Akil Simpson earned the Rebound Award for the second year in-a-row, grabbing a team-best 8.3 per game, and was voted to the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team, scoring 13.2 points per game. She finished the year with 10 double-doubles, and was eighth in the league with a 49.9 shooting percentage.

Sophomore Gabrielle Wilkins was also a repeat winner, earning the team's Hustle Award. The guard averaged 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds with 44 assists and 31 steals. Freshman Kiara Perry was awarded the Defensive Award, recording 30 steals and 10 blocks as a guard. She also scored 7.9 points with 4.7 rebounds per game.

The Mustangs concluded the 2013-14 season with the program's seventh appearance in the WNIT, advancing to the second round. SMU posted an 18-14 record overall, going 8-10 in the inaugural season of The American.

Congratulations!

I don't know much about the WNBA, but I did pay attention to the draft last night to see if Keena was selected (she wasn't).

Hopefully she finds a way to keep playing if she wants.
