Pathetic Fan Support

Postby PK » Sat Dec 08, 2001 8:02 pm

The women's basketball team beats BYU by a score of 92 to 83 in Moody this afternoon and only 556 fans are there to see it. PATHETIC!!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

You are right. The size of the crowd was disappointing. But, the game was very interesting. When BYU made a run in the second half, Coach Rhonda really got into the game. The BYU coach did, too. The technical foul called on him came at a critical time. Watching Andrea Cossey play is worth the cost of admission. She had 27 points, including 16 of 17 free throws. This was a nice game to win. BYU beat us pretty bad last year.

Our pathetic fan support isn't limited to women's hoops, although women's sports aren't very well attended at most schools...even those who have great support for men's bball & football.

We have great facilities. If we could just figure out a way to pack them when our teams play, I've got to believe it would be a lot easier for our coaches to sell SMU as a place student-athletes would want to play.

It's a combination of not winning enough, not playing an attractive enough schedule, lack of marketing and perhaps ticket pricing...but SMU really needs to work on getting the SMU community involved 1st...then try to reach more of the DFW market to help turn this thing around.

Of course, it would help to be back in the good old SWC and have the visitors help us pack the stands!
