If it's not straight hardship, there's another waiver called the "runoff rule". That's typically used for players who were kicked off teams for any reason. Oklahoma is using that Missouri WR transfer Dorial Green-Beckham.
Nothing would suggest that anything like that happened at Virginia Tech. Then again, none of us know the real story either.
Just throwing this into the mix for the sake of discussion.
