According to report by Adam Zagoria of Sports Net New York, the NCAA clearinghouse has cleared Emmanuel Mudiay, the nation’s No. 1 point guard in the 2014 class who committed to SMU before signing a lucrative deal overseas.

But SMU fans shouldn’t get too excited. Zagoria reports that Mudiay will still play overseas for financial reasons.

Mudiay had been accepted into SMU but had yet to be cleared by the NCAA before turning pro earlier this month.

Reports about academic problems at Prime Prep and amateurism issues clouded his situation, but Mudiay was always adamant that his decision was solely based on financial reasons. Mudiay signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million with China’s Guangdong Tigers.

A McDonald’s All-American, Mudiay was dominant at Prime Prep, where he averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four assists per as a senior.
