OT: Favorite college bball teams to watch outside of SMU

Postby OhioBrownFan » Fri Aug 22, 2014 9:29 am

So obviously I'm a big Ohio State fan, but have adopted the Ponies for the last couple years since Brown took over. Do any of you guys watch other teams and follow how they're doing? I don't even follow my alma mater as much as I watch SMU, my brother is all-in too, he barely watches any college basketball outside of Duke/OSU, but last year he was texting me on week nights during SMU games.

Another brother went to Ohio State, but grew up very loyal to Indiana basketball who is still his team. OSU runs a close 2nd unfortunately.

I've got several teams I like to watch, each for different reasons:

Duke - because I know they will always play hard and they always get the opponent's best effort. If the game is at Cameron it is must see because i want the Moody experience to be like Cameron. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we are even close to being there yet but last season showed the potential is there. As we continue to grow as a fan base, and more importantly the students get into the games, Moody can be a very special place, like Cameron.

Michigan St.- I've always liked Izzo. His teams play high level defense and are very athletic - entertaining basketball. Plus, he's as good as it gets at having his team ready for the tournament.

WCC - I started watching a lot of WCC games while living in LA. I love the small arenas and competitive games. I lived about 10 minutes from the Loyola Marymount campus and worked with several people who went to WCC schools. It's a good mid-major conference.

Minnesota - I have had a lot of family attend there and I've been following them for most of my life. LOVED the Richard Pitino hire but I HATE HATE HATE that his daddy is Rick Pitino

Duke - Coach K is second to none

Kentucky - I know I will get a lot of [deleted] for this, but I grew up a huge UK fan (because of my mothers family), and my freshman year is when they won the their most recent national title. It was good growing up a UK fan because I learned how to be a passionate fan and I have transitioned that to SMU.

Haha, no shame. I used to follow UK back in the Pitino days with Scott Pageant, Ron Mercer, and Jeff Shephard there. Loved watching those teams from 96-98. Those guys could play.

Minnesota (Most of you know my ties there. No place better than The Barn)

The B1G 10 (except Wisconsin)

UNLV (Grew up there; Bring back Sidney Green and Glen Gondrezik; Hall of Famer Jerry Tarkanian. Hoopmanx will back me)

SDSU - Living in San Diego, Viejas Arena can get absolutely bumpin. Coach Fish has done a masterful job there. Aztecs are no joke.

Duke - was always my team "big" growing up.

Big XII bball in general. Always enjoyed watching KU, KSU and OU.
BOP - Providing insensitivity training for a politically correct world since 1989.

UCLA, UT, cause my kids are there and like to talk sports with me. I also like to watch the West Coast Conference.

ND, only other team I follow. Admit mostly in football but do watch their occasional basketball games.

Clemson, South Carolina, College of Charleston as my "local schools", Duke because we lived there during the Hurley-Laettner-Hill final four years and adopted them and Michigan State because Mrs CP is a Spartan...but I don't follow any of them anywhere near as closely as SMU

Cannot help but follow Arkansas here whether you like them or not. They are fun to watch and I really do like Mike Anderson.

New Mexico. Have been to games at The Pit since the Norm Ellenberger days.

UCONN. Hey, We sucked, we didn't play them, I live in the Northeast not too awful far from Storrs and they have always been relevant. I was ecstatic about their run last year. But I was even happier that we beat them twice. I wish them nothing but the best except for 2-4 times per year.

Virginia: neighbor/best friend and hoops-watching buddy's alma mater. Always interesting and an ACC underdog.
