Re: Official: SMU vs. EWU ThreadThe Eastern Washington Eagles went 15-16 last year, which doesnt sound significant unless you see it in the context of that is the teams best record in a decade, and it continues a slow but steady course of improvement under Head Coach Jim Hayford, who is now starting his 4th season leading the Eagles. With their entire roster returning from last season, EWU looks to continue the climb, and possibly breakthrough by earning a post-season bid. They are off to a hot start, winning all 3 games by blowouts, and 2 of their opponents were teams that made the NIT last year.
Its no surprise that the leaders this year are the same as last, Tyler Harvey is a 6'4" shooting guard averaging 18.3 ppg, up just slightly from last years performance. Harvey is shooting 58% from the three-point arc, he's actually shooting a better percentage outside the arc, than inside. He's a bomber, averaging 5 made 3-pointers per game. He doesnt seem to drive the lane much, he hasnt attempted a single free throw this year, and takes fewer shots from inside the 3-point line, than outside. Last year Harvey was both First Team All-Big Sky Conference, and Academic All Conference. Venky Jois is a 6'8" 230 pound forward out of Australia. He's the inside compliment to Harvey's outside game. Jois averaged 13.4 ppg and 8 rpg as a soph, and this year he is up to 17 ppg. Drew Brandon, a 6'4" senior, lead the Big SKy in assists last year, and is back on his game this year averaging 6 assists and a team leading 8 rebounds per game to go along with his 10 ppg. Brandon is the driver and distributor setting up Harvey and Jois. Parker Kelly is another senior guard returning this year, barring injury Kelly is expected to break the school records for most career games played, and games started. He also has a realistic chance to reach the school record for made 3-pointers, and free throw percentage. He's a shooter, this year he's 45% from the arc, and 100% from the line. Ognjen Miljkovic is a 6'7" sophmore forward who seems to have played his way into the starting lineup, and is averaging 10 points per game. Freshman guard Sir Washington (real name) is also averaging 10 ppg, off the bench. 7'1" sophmore Frederick Jorge played sparingly last year, but he has started once this season, and is averaging 7.3 ppg. Big things were expected from Kyle Reid, a 6'8" JC forward, who played in high school with Harvey and Miljovic and was this years top recruit, but so far he has not cracked the starting lineup. EWU doesnt have much size, and will probably be less athletic than SMU, but they definitely have shooters, and the 3-point arc is where SMU has struggled defensively. SMU should win, but their shooters may keep them close for awhile. WHen EWU's interior players get in foul trouble, SMU should be able to pull away. EWU is a very international team, they have 3 Australians, 3 Germans, and one Croatian player on their roster.
