Daryl Morey Can't Stand This Offense

Postby SMUstang07 » Thu Dec 18, 2014 8:53 am

I know we won by 20 against UIC but this is a general comment on the offense. We only shot 5 three-pointers all game. I love Larry but he needs to recognize that advanced stats help teams. Less long twos and more threes in general. We do take a lot of shots at the rim though.

Yeah well we balance it out by allowing a lot of open threes

Love Larry and wouldn't second guess a hall of fame coach, but more threes make sense.

Seems to me you could design a few set plays to set up Frasier for the three. When he is on he won't miss and it would open up the floor.

It looked to me they have put in some plays for Nic to get open jumpers. Wish they would do the same for Frasier.

The only problem is that we are only have two guys (three if you consider J-Mart) who are Strok333rs, which limits our ability to space the floor.

Agree with this. I think he's playing to his players' strengths. We have a lot of length and depth in the front court which certainly gives us an advantage against these mid-majors like WY, UCSB, EWU. But, when we play high quality teams, I would think a more inside/outside game would prevail. I'd also like to see us run a lot more (our bigs are not 'bangers' but more 'runners'), which of course means the team has to be disciplined and get steals which they are certainly capable of doing.

We don't have the dribble penetrators who can create space on the outisde, or traditional post up centers who can pass the ball back out. MK will fix a lot of that when/if he returns, and I bet you see the number of 3 attempts rise considerably.

If you're bigger than the other team, you go inside. If you're smaller you go outside. Remember that inside shots are generally higher percentage shots than launching 3's unless you're name is Jimmer. Unless you have a guy who hits 3's 70% of the time, you have better odds going inside. Think 3 touches per minute = 1.5 touches per team per minute. Over 40 minutes that equals 60 touches. With 20 turnovers (our rate it seems) that equals 40 touches. If you hit 40% from 3 point range and you shoot 3's on 20 touches that's 8 3's or 24 points and if you shoot 70% inside. That's 28 points. So, you have 52 points. If instead you shoot 5 threes and hit 60%, that's 12 points and 35 inside = 25 baskets that's 50 points and you have 62 points. So, by being selective with your 3's it raises your percentage and it raises your point total. Again, if you have a bomber who hits 60-70% even when guarded, then launch. Also, by working for solid looks inside and outside you run down the clock on the other team which when you have a lead is a good thing or if you are against a running and gunning team, you slow down the pace of the game. Either way, it may not be exciting, but it wins. When LB had the Truth at Philly, he let him jack it up every time up the court. KF is not the Truth, yet.

Yet being the key term. I am loving getting to witness KF's progression. He was going to be a Gerald Green clone, not a bad player and unbelievably athletic, but unfocused and blacktop-ish. He's now going have a much broader arsenal due to the tough love he's been getting from LB in his time here. You can see LB's light starting to change to green for KF, and KF changing from Green.

Oh man, if only Sasser had had LB as coach.

Simple question....who's going to win in a game to 20?

Guy A: Shoots 50% from inside the arc and only shoots inside the arc.
Guy B: Shoots 33% from 3 and only shoots 3's in the game.

Answer: You're going to end up with a tie pretty much. The three ball makes a huge difference in today's game and it is absolutely a critical part of the game. You can shoot much worse from outside than in the paint to still get the same amount of points. Fact.

I hate to be "that guy", but you are discounting the additional points that the people inside the arc gain by drawing fouls and getting free throws, which you rarely do outside the arc.

When you are a good team, people prepare for you better. People aren't leaving Nic or Keith to help inside, they leave Brown, Ben E, or Ryan. We are doing a GREAT job of NOT taking contested three's from the outside and instead working the ball inside for a much higher percentage shot.
