Match Up Well With Nevada

Postby Wolfhomie » Fri Feb 14, 2003 12:57 pm

I concur with ol' Pony -- you matched up well with Nevada for my taste! You should know a pony never comes into a wolves' den without feeling the wrath of the wolf! Good luck against Fresno!

I have no desire to see them again this year. I saw enough of them last year in the tourney...ruined my whole trip to Tulsa. The sad part is, this is a league where any team can beat any team on a given night. Except perhaps UTEP, which has been consistently terrible. I wouldn't mind playing UTEP or SJSU but they will be playing each other in the 1st round of the WAC tourney and then the winner will be playing the top seed so we're going to have to play someone very capable of beating us. We just gotta keep our chins up and get ready fo Fresno St. It's not like this loss was totally unexpected. Nobody in this conference is beating Nevada at home right now.

Ed P., you always seem to put a positive spin on things. It is as simple as this...another Dement coached team got its butt kicked on the road against an average team. The end is near for Dement.

Johnny-If you were a Missouri fan, would you want to fire Snyder? I mean after all he lost to ATM. That guy can't coach. Roy William lost to Colorado. Idiot. It amazes me that you can't see the strides this SMU team had made this year.

I think Johnny Rock is on the money. What strides has this team made in Dements tenure? They play a disorganized brand of ball mostly due to the fact he guarantees the green light to every single "star' recruit he brings in. He lost control of this beast long ago and has never had the respect of his players. If they played w/some sort of urgency or offensive structure, they'd still be the worst defensive perimeter team in America. Its embarrassing how they get lit up from the arc every single game.

We aren't incredibly talented, but on paper, we have a FAR better collection of talent than most of the league and certainly Nevada. People around here act like Nevada is some great shakes. In reality, they are a middle of the road team in a less than average conference.

Billy Tubbs urinated on Dement until he decided it was time to haul. Dement is an overrated recruiter. Yes, injuries to Nigel and Voc have really hurt this team, but where has been the marginal post play for 5 years? This year we are slightly better, but come on already. Its been horrid in the post since Poerner

No results equal no results. Say we brought back Jimmy Tubbs to coach. Guess what? He'd recruit better than Dement and certainly have everyones ear locally. Does anyone think he'd be worse at the Xs and O's? What X's and O's have you seen from Dement? Anyone think he'd garner less respect from his players than Dement does? Not possible.

The bottomline is results and not excuses. Its really not that hard to build a basketball contender It takes one very good class, thats it. SMU has never come close to that under Dement. Willie/Sas/Elsey had one player in the Nations Top 100 players. Sas wasn't even a consensus Top 100 either, just in a spattering of gurus eyes. Pat Simpson made a few lists and now BHop.

SMU could be so much more in hoops. If they used the talent they do have effectively and played disciplined like a Gonzaga, we'd have some post-season accolades in Dements tenure. Problem is, we don't play that way, instead, we let our middle of the road talent gun at will and try to be more athletic than the next guy. We don't have that luxury.

The only way to become a serious basketball school is to let dement go and get a guy that demands execution. Get that done and we compete in the WAC w/the current talent pool. Get a guy that can recruit big time and we'll really be on our way.

As is, this team is no different than any of Dements other squads.

You want proof, check our total number of team assists in the Dement era. Its abyssmal. If we score, its from a gun. Nothing is ever manufactured and you just can't succeed that way if you are SMU.

Mullet you can talk all you want but Dement is going to be here for awhile. He has 2 years left on his contract. He's not going anywhere.

Nacho, Didn't say he was going anywhere, just said he should be gone. Your schtick is tiresome. I'd rather crap my shorts on a warm summers day than banter w/the witless.

You 2 make quite a pair. I was only giving what I thought was a reasonable response.

The Dement bashers always come out after a loss. Any reasonable person saw that loss at Reno coming a mile away.

SMU could still end up 3rd in the WAC. Not a bad seed all things considered.

To whom ever said SMU was a good bet last night, we thank you. Its clowns like you that help make Nevada sportsbooks rich! That one statement shows me the credibility of SMU fans. I've seen Nacho take a beating, but in REALITY he is the only one I've seen make realistic statements. To the rest of you, I'm sorry your egos have taken such a beating, but get used to it! Nevada has, and will continue to, put the smack down on the ponies in both F-ball and B-ball.

You are absolutely correct MulletMike. It is nice to see someone with a realistic viewpoint. With two years left on his contract, Dement very well may be here awhile longer. But this begs the question...why does he have two years left? Copeland has failed miserably in his hirings of Dement and Cavan. Bennett was a great hire. Maybe Copeland can get it right with his second hire in basketball. And to OldPony....your post in response to my post is incorrect. Missouri is a top 25-30 team this year that will most likely make the NCAA tournament. SMU is a bottom tier team that will not make any post season tournament. In fact, Dement has never made the NCAA tournament since he has coached at SMU! It is time for him to go. I also have seen a lack of fan support and local interest in the team since Dement first became coach. No one goes to the games, except for Ed P. and OldPony and a few other wishful thinkers. I know there are many others out there that are on board with Johnny Rock and MulletMike. It is time to rise up and make a stand and get a coach that will take us to the tournament!!!

I feel like raiding the Reno campus and taking hostages. Just kidding. WOLF PACK, you have displayed the intelligence level of a typical Nevada fan. If I recall, I believe you lost on our court a few weeks back? Hmmm... maybe I was dreaming.

Nacho, I've always been a Dement-basher. I'd like to see Mike Jr. finish school at SMU though...give him a couple more years and then we can fire his dad.
