Special Academic Achievement Award

Postby Stallion » Sat Feb 15, 2003 6:40 pm

....goes to Louisiana Tech JC Basketball Team which recorded an unbelievable .08% average graduation rate over a 4 year period according to the NCAA. However, they did score a PERFECT 0000000000% graduation rate among Minorities over the same period! Congratulations To Louisiana Tech JC for this incredible achievement.

they ain't the only ones in the wild, wild WAC with the following 4 year average graduation rates-San Jose 13%, Hawaii 13%, Fresno 14%, Nevada 20%, UTEP 25%, Boise 44%, Tulsa 50%, Rice 70%, and SMU 90%.

Get away with what? There's never been any rules dictating any kind of minimum graduation rate. No penalty for low graduation rates. There's been talk about it for the last 3 years, but its only been talk.
How many basketball players do you think graduated from TCU after Billy Tubbs was first hired, and how much do you think that bothered any of the Frog fans? For that matter, how many times did our fans, on this board and the other one, talk about how they would gladly take TCU's graduation rate in exchange for a single appearance in the NIT? Over and over again our fans stated how much they'd like to have a 0% grad rate, it was like the Holy Grail. Some people will accept anything, even actively seek it out, if it means winning games.

How do they get away with it? They get away with it because no one gives a damn. Particularly not the NCAA, which is dependant on the larger schools football and basketball programs for their income.

Seriously, aside from fielding completely mediocre sports teams, is this the worst academic conference in America?

No, that would be the SunBelt. Rice's being part of the WAC gives us an edge.

Gents- I understand that there will be a penalty instituted this year. The peanlties haven't been decided but could prohibit post season play. My sources say it is a done deal by NCAA Presidents but doesn't yet have details worked out. This is being directly aimed at the Cincinnati's og the world.

That would be interesting. Cincy gets a pseudo unfair rep. Its a commuter school that takes tons o'jucos, so those don't count towards graduation rates. Also, in hoops, they send bunches of players to the league early which also doesn't count.

Its like the only way you get credit for graduating players is if you get 4 year guys that aren't good enough to leave early. The rates look good, but the programs suffer economically and in Top 25 prestige. Not to mention of all the kids who graduate, who gets a better paying job than one who leaves for the league? College is about life and job preparation. Tricky issue.
