On the way home from high school graduation "practice" at Moody, my friends and I stopped at Pancho's (Home of $3.99 All you can eat Mexican food) to do some serious damage to Pancho's profit margins.

Without my knowledge, one of my idiot friends (the future Aggie) stole one of their display signs and threw it in the back of the Ford Escort. Of course, we got pulled over for "Driving while Teenagers" by a Richardson cop. As the cop was reading us our rights, all I could think about was calling my father from jail when both set's of grandparents were flying in to see me graduate. Since that thought made me laugh, the Richardson cop launched into another 20 minute tirade about the seriousness of the situation before he eventually let us go.

Greatness. Man, Michael Stipe was very inebriated that night. And I remember him apologizing for the upbeat nature of "Shiny Happy People" as if that was a problem

Back in the sixties when Coach Dreibrodt conducted the Mustang Band, the band used to play the Southwest Conference visiting team's alma mater and fight song before the game in the name of good sportsmanship. One year we were playing the Aggie War Hymm and several corp members were very upset. They came down to Driebrodt and tried to intervene, saying that only the Aggie band was allowed to play their alma mater. As you can imagine, Coach told them to stick it where the sun don't shine!

Given how the Corp did in its fight with our cheerleaders, my money would be on the band.

The best Driebrodt story is the "Well then I think you are son of a [deleted]" story -

Cop at A&M (of course) giving band grief and not letting them leave when it was wide open and clearly ready to go…

Dreibrodt(Coach)- what if i called you a Son of a [deleted] - what would you do?
Cop - probably haul you downtown and book you…
Coach - Well what if I just thought you were a son of a [deleted]?
Cop - Guess i couldn't do anything about that..
Coach - Well then i think you are a son of a [deleted]!!

Probably hard for some of you younger to imagine….but The SMU band had a serious bad attitude and was a small but powerful force back then….basically reflecting coach - that guy was one of a kind.

Senior Year: on of my fraternity brothers was picked to shoot from half court at halftime to win something. When he threw it up there and nearly missed the court, his fraternity brothers (and the crowd) booed him.
