If you want to find a good x and o's guy, you look at some of the small programs with no talent that seem to play better than they really are. The problem is that these guys can't recruit. One guy who seems to be having a team play about its talent level right now is Rick Boyages at William & Mary. No way are they a .500 team. Another source is NBA assistants. Each team now has about four or five assistants some of whom are name NBA players. These would have the ability to recruit and if they were good bench assistants they might be willing to take a college head coaching position to prove their head coaching abilities.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

A pro name assistant gets you a name assistant. Period. Unless they have some college coaching experience, that is a recipe for disaster. How many over worked NBA folks do you know that think driving around Texas three times looking at highschool kids would be fun? After the relatively pampered life that most have led, that would be a rude awakening.

Good X and O coaches from small programs may be excellent recruiters. They fish in different ponds with different bait. It is all about being better than your competition. William and Mary used to compete in the Colonial Athletic Conference when Navy, Richmond, and James Madison were strong. William and Mary was always in the thick of the battle even though they faced a similar academic situation as does SMU within the conference. You know how they won? They played a style that let there players be successful. It wasn't the most exciting way to spend an evening until the score was 62-61 and there was another win on the board. I don't think that we have to play a real deliberate style to be successful, but we do have to play one that takes advantage of our strenghts and others weakness. All I see currently is, lets have at it.
