What to hope for this week for the 'Stangs

Postby RE Tycoon » Tue Mar 04, 2003 1:55 am

IF Fresno State IS ineligible for the WAC tourney, this is what we should hope for regarding the three teams ahead of us for SMU to get a top seed. This presumes we win saturday, and we end up with a 11-7 conference record.
As of monday night Rice, Tulsa and Nevada are tied for 2nd (or 1st depending on how you look at it) with a 10-6 conference record. They all have 2 games left and they all play against each other or Fresno State.

The best situation is that Tulsa loses both of their games meaning they lose to Fresno St. and Nevada. They end up with a 10-8 conference record (17-11 overall)

This means Rice would have to beat Nevada so Nevada would end up 11-7 in the WAC (16-12 overall).

Rice would have to lose to Fresno St. so they would also be 11-7 in the WAC (19-9 overall).

The way I see it is that Rice, Nevada and SMU end up 11-7 in the WAC, we beat rice twice this year so that gives us the nod even though they have a better overall record. Nevada and SMU split the regular season series and will end up with the same 16-12 record overall so I have no idea how they will determine the seeding there.

Remember this is under ideal circumstances only. I want to hear what everyone else thinks and if anyone knows who would get the first seed between us and Nevada if what I described above happens.

GO 'Stangs!

If you are tied after comparing head to head records you start at the top of the standings and compare downward until one team has the edge.

BTW-- I wouldn't count on Tulsa losing twice. Image

Overall record is meaningless, only your conference record affects the seedings. Nevada holds a tie breaker edge over SMU, because they've beaten Fresno.

CPC doesnt see much problem with beating La. Tech at this point. Its obvious they are in the middle of a major collapse, and rumor out of Ruston is that the team is in revolt against the coach. The question now is how hard will Fresno play the rest of the way, now that they have nothing to play for? They've already clinched the regular season title, and cant go anywhere from there. If they mail it in and lose to both Rice and Tulsa, then Nevada splits the 2 games, SMU would be 3rd behind Tulsa and Nevada, but ahead of Rice (head to head tie breaker) and would play Hawaii or Tech in the first round of the tourney.
Some will tell you that a glass is half empty, and others that the same glass is half full. But all CPC really wants to know is...... does the drink taste good?

Rumor may be that LaTech players are revolting but fact is this collapse has been happening during the Mardi Gras season. These kids have simple been partying their tails off.

Today is Fat Tueday so LaTech players should be clean and sober by Satuday. I would not write off LaTech just yet.

Thats pretty weak. Were they throwing these Mardi Gras parties in Boise Idaho? And El Paso? Because thats where the Tech team spent this past weekend. They must have gotten a real early start on Mardi for the parties to have overlapped with their home loss to Northern Iowa.

Despite what some may seem to think, Ruston La. isnt much closer to New Orleans than Dallas is. The holiday affects their campus about as much as it does ours. The kids who want to get in on the parties get in their cars and drive south. Blaming the meltdown of the Tech Bball team on Mardi Gras is just sticking your head in the sand.

Geography and knowledge of regional culture isn't a strong point for some. Mardi Gras isn't simply a few parades in NO. The entire state celebrates the season. A great excuse to party non stop. And in Ruston, a dry Parish, an excuse to party is always a welcome event. Yes, folks have to head to Monroe or Shreveport/Bossier (oh yeah, River boats as well) to have fully enjoy Mardi Gras entertainment. And it does happen.

These are college kids that are desperate to have an excuse to party. I would still be wary of LaTech come Saturday.

Then again, one can always please their faith in unsubstantiated rumors.

Techs blowout losses to the pituful UTEP Miners and Boise State werent unsubstantiated rumor, you can read about them in the papers. Likewise the loss on their homecourt to Northern Iowa.

Lets examine this Mardi Gras theory, though. Apparently, the ball players at Tech got an early start on the revelry, getting toasted more than a full week ahead of time, causing them to lose at home to Northern Iowa. Then, since they couldnt go to New Orleans or Shreveport with all their classmates, on wednesday they packed up all the beer and bourbon and beads and floats and topless girls, and took them on the road to UTEP and Boise with them. Cant miss out on a party, not at any cost. That must have been a humdinger, Mardi Gras in Idaho....

Hopefully you can see where your theory begins to fall apart. Even if the entire state of Louisiana spends the weekend in a drunken stupor, and the entire student body at Tech descends on the Shreveport Casino's en masse for an orgy of drinking, gambling and pancake eating, it wouldnt matter. The basketball team left town on wednesday, and they were thousands of miles away from the closest parade.

I like the Mardi Gras theory. It's kind of like the mini-skirt and Super Bowl theories for the stock market. Interesting but useless.

Mardi Gras season begins on 12th night (that is Jan 6th) and continues through Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). It isn't a one-weekend fling.

Then again, a rumor that the players are revolting against the coach (strange, one has never ever heard THAT rumor about a team before <sarcasm off> ) explains everything.

But one does grow tired of this frivolity

To continue the religious theme (Mardi Gras) are Fresno and TCU giving up basketball for Lent?
