Thanks so much for sharing that. Those were good basketball times. Kato was the best.

He still has done something that no other SMU PG has ever done

SWC Championship
SWC Tournament Championship
NCAA Tournament Victory

His duel between David Wesley (?) of Baylor in SWC Tournament Championship at Reunion was incredible-then took it up a notch against David Rivers and Notre Dame the next week

That 1988 SWC tournament at Reunion is still one of my best SMU moments. What a great weekend...

Hopefully Nic joins him in that record book this season.

Kato was electrifying. He was quick on quick. He had a beautiful jump shot, and he
could also aggressively drive to the basket and jam the ball from the free throw line.
Thanks for sharing the article. It was good to share the memories once again.

I'm glad he has had the maturity to enjoy his life and to continue being a success.
He is a great man and was one of the best SMU players of all time. He has overcome
so many obstacles. I'm glad D Magazine did this article on him to remind the people of
Dallas about SMU basketball and one of our greatest players.

One of my favorite Kato moments was his drive down the lane and dunk over Notre Dame's big man in that 1st round tourney win at Chapel Hill. That was the Kato vs David Rivers game and a nice moment in SMU's NCAA bball history. Of course, we had to play Duke in that 2nd round. That was a tough seeding.

Of all the misdeeds Pye did to our athletes and athletic program, the travesty that was done to Kato was the worst. He not only was a great player but a terrific person who deserved better from the school. His mother insisted he stay in school and get his degree. He is a better man than me as I would have never set foot on the SMU campus again. He still comes to games and participates in Lettermen basketball games from time to time. He deserves all of our admiration. He is a winner!

For students living through the DP era, Kato Armstrong was SMU sports. While I try to forget building homecoming floats for Soccer games, I will never forget leaving Moody with no voice after a game against the Hogs.
