Appeal timeline

Andy KatzESPN Senior Writer

SMU has 15 days to appeal postseason ban. COI has 30 days to respond. SMU 14 days for rebuttal. Appeal hearing 30 days later. Results 30 days later. Got it? Earliest SMU will know is Feb., and could be up to Selection Sunday. So this will drag on.

Is it possible it could drag out beyond selection Sunday and we actually win the appeal but not get to play in post season due to the timing?

I would rather move forward asap and get the thing resolved. I think we have a good case for excessive punishment.

sanctions are on hold during appeal. that's the whole thought process behind an appeal here. drag this out, LB coaches this season, Nic, MK & JT have a shot at making Tourney if we play well enough to get in - wouldn't that be such a thorn in their side too? until they realize the ratings boost it would actually create in the Tourney where the NCAA makes ALL of their operating budget - then they might just actually slow play it. the interesting thing to watch will be to see how it all plays out with Boeheim and Syracuse and the timing of their appeal.

no problem. plus, we all sort of anticipated a "reset" of sorts next year anyway so if the post season ban was upheld on appeal and pushed to 17, it's not a total program crusher and Ben E, Ben Moore, Keith (?) and Sterling will have their shot this year. then in 18, Semi will be a senior, we will have no juniors b/c of the lost class from Mudiay, and in 18, you'll have Sed, Shake & Jarry (if they stay) as Juniors leading the team and probably a JuCo transfer in there somewhere along the line, or another TFR like Tolbert or Semi.

right, even if we get NOTHING reduced on appeal except pushing the sanctions off until after the NCAA Tourney (assuming we make it), then so what? it still sucks, but we get to take our big swing this year with our 'big guns' that have shown improvement every year.

i look at it like the 'vacating' of wins. They can't take that experience away from us. They can't take the excitement we had in '13-14 away by vacating some wins of games that KF participated in. can't take away the moody magic, UNLESS WE ROLL OVER AND LET THEM BEAT US DOWN GOING FORWARD - now is when we have to punch them square in the mouth and say NO MORE!

(*if you know someone at the school, know a trustee, know someone in the AD's office, now would be a good time to express that if we are going to say we strive to be P5 caliber, now, more than ever, is time to prove it by not tucking tail and crawling in the corner - can you imagine what kind of message not appealing would send to Morris?)

mix in the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, this could easily go into late-March.

based upon this timeline above, the dates would be as follows:

9/29/15
10/14/15
11/13/15
11/27/15
12/27/15
1/26/16

I know very little about this, but if you take the timeline Katz gave in first post, then these dates are correct. Are these just guidelines or are they all set in stone? Where are the opportunities to delay it past March?

and lets just assume

does ANYONE work the week of thanksgiving? how about the week between Christmas Eve and New Years Day, especial people that work at institutes of higher learning when that's their break.

the appeals committee seems very smart/well educated, and other than the lady at UT, the other 4 are small/private school types. all with other jobs. other than Syracuse, what other appeals are currently pending? anyone know?

junior, using those numbers i get 119 days = 17 weeks, referencing this article, 'cuse was handed down their sanctions on 3/6/15, and filed appeal on 3/21/15

that means that Syracuse, by that schedule, would have had their appeal wrapped up on JULY 18, 2015. it is now 10.5 weeks later and they still have not gotten a result. SO, lets just say they get their answer by saturday (doubtful) and it took 11 extra weeks to come to a conclusion, that means it took them 30 weeks. if we file on the 14th of october and it takes 30 weeks, that's May 11. we only need to stretch it to 25 weeks which is 2 days after the championship game.

Just thinking about the appeal.

Lets say we win the appeal and the postseason ban is next year not this year.

Could SMU just redshirt its entire team and play 10 walk-ons next year?

are we certain that filing an appeal provides a stay of the enforcement of sanctions? I know it's true in regular U.S. courts of appeals proceedings but does the NCAA do the same?
