Baylor Names Committee In Bball Coach Search

Postby MrMustang1965 » Wed Aug 13, 2003 4:14 pm

Baylor regent Jim Turner, president and CEO of Dallas-based Dr.Pepper/Seven-Up Bottling Group, will chair an advisory committee charged with recommending a new basketball coach and athletic director to school president Robert Sloan.

Turner, a three-year letterman at Baylor in the late 1960s, was a member of the committee that chose former head basketball coach Dave Bliss in 1999.

Bliss resigned last week in the midst of a tumultuous situation that includes the murder of a player, the charging of a teammate in the killing, admittance of being a part of violating NCAA rules by paying the tuition of two players and questionable handling of drug tests by staff members.

The other members of the committee are former Baylor basketball players David Sibley and Tommy Bowman; Dallas regent Joe Armes, executive vice-president and CFO of Southwest Sports Group and Southwest Sports Realty; Baylor law school associate dean Leah Jackson; and Waco banker and Baylor alumnus David Lacy.

"While speed will be a priority, we will focus on finding the right combination of experience, athletic success, and a commitment to integrity and Baylor's unique mission that will yield the results our constituents expect and deserve," Sloan said. "Uncertainty is [deleted] all of us -especially our players and our fans - so we will move as quickly as possible in making these key appointments."

In its search for a coach, Sloan said the committe will look for a "proven recruiter, mentor and winner."

Sloan said there has been some movement in terms of developing candidates for the position, but he did not say whether the school would concentrate on current head coaches, former head coaches or top assistants.

interesting that Sloan puts proven recruiter at the top of his list. One could read into that to mean John Lucas is not the leading candidate because he certainly does not have a college recruiting background.
