Ok, let's run those numbers:

Rossley was below .500 every year, so no bowls

Cavan had one winning season in five years of coaching. So one bowl game there.

Bennett had one winning season in six years of coaching. So one bowl game there.

So that comes to two bowl games in seventeen years.

June had four bowl games in seven years. And he won three of those four.

It really sucks to be defending a guy who I've consistently said wasn't a good cultural fit here and should have been fired in 2011.

Rossley had a 5-6 team in a power conference (SWC). Pretty sure that would've got SMU in a bowl game on JJ's watch. Weren't there 3 or 4 P5 schools with losing records in bowls this year? Also, Rossley won at Arkansas that year. That would've been the biggest win for JJ at SMU by a mile. He also beat TCU and Houston that year.

Thought five win teams weren't eligible for bowls until very recently. Not during JJ's tenure. But ok, give Rossley a bowl. That makes three in seventeen years to four in JJ's seven.

You might be right. I'm not sure the timeline on allowing teams with a losing record in bowls.

In Hayden Frys day I believe we went to a bowl with only 5 wins, It was an exception of the day. Mrydel, who was probably on or coaching that team, can tell us if this is true.

Since the hypothetical is "under today's bowl standards," I would say Rossley and Cavan would have 12 games including one vs an FCS, all things being equal.

Not during my time. Only bowl we made it to in my tenure was the Astro Bluebonnet when we beat Oklahoma on New Years Eve. But I do believe a 5 win team did go to a bowl in a prior year.

5 win teams were allowed this year as an exception as the NCAA sanctioned too many bowl games and there weren't enough 6+ win teams to fill the spots

1963 vs. Oregon. SMU was 4-7 that year.
