SMU/Brown/Fraizer in New York Times

Postby aus10fromhous10 » Mon Mar 07, 2016 4:40 pm

The cover story of Sunday's sports section in The New York Times is about SMU/Larry Brown/Keith Frazier. Mostly a rehash of what's already out there, but the story dominates the front page and takes up an entire inside page as well:

Fortunately nobody reads that rag any more. Very sad what that great news organization has become.

I bet this writer did his home work and decided to point the article in one direction as to carry his opinion to sell to readers without presenting the facts of the contrary.

Brown had coached college ball twice before, and twice the N.C.A.A. sanctions ax had fallen on his teams, at U.C.L.A. and Kansas. Those penalties were ridiculous, he told me. Check it out.
I did, and he was wrong. At Kansas, there was a taped telephone call in which Brown admitted to illegal payments and assistants who acted as bagmen. At U.C.L.A., he coached his team to the title game, only to have the N.C.A.A. toss out the tournament run because Brown had played two players who were academically ineligible.

Here is an article by the NY times back in 1988

http://www.nytimes.com/1988/11/02/sport ... ansas.html

Brown, addressing the Askew matter, said the report mentioned ''a kid visiting his grandmother because she was ill.''

''I gave him exactly $364,'' Brown said, ''which was the price for the round-trip ticket, and we told the N.C.A.A. about it. The kid's grandmother, who raised him, passed away a short time later.''

Not exactly what went on and can't defend brown with certainty, but I think this is a case of a writer neglecting certain important facts to get his point across because if the facts above were pointed out, the readers might sympathize with Brown.

I'm glad we are recruiting as well as we are, otherwise this might really sting.

Bit surprised A&M took the risk given how well they had done recruiting recently. Maybe they felt there last class was only a flash in the pan and a result of their specific link into DFW through Avery Johnson and son. A&M is a big school but not a big basketball school so I think the Big time basketball schools might get the NCAA to pop them if they make too many inroads against the powers that be.

Didn't A&M lose 2 assistants for smaller HC gigs?
