Former Duncanville standout becomes first recruit to sign with Mays and staff

DALLAS (SMU) – Tiara Davenport, a former Duncanville High School standout and transfer from Louisiana Tech, becomes the first recruit to sign with first-year SMU women’s basketball head coach Travis Mays. The junior signed a grant-in-aid form Tuesday, the coaching staff announced, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

“Tiara’s winning experience with Cathy Self-Morgan at Duncanville gives us a solid foundation to build on at SMU,” Mays stated. “Tiara is a versatile athlete on the court who was a significant contributor at LA Tech the last two seasons and was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team. We are hoping she has the same impact here at SMU, and we are very excited to add Tiara to the Mustang family.”

Davenport played in 60 games over two seasons at Louisiana Tech. The 6-foot guard was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team after shooting 42 percent from the field and averaging 5.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. She scored at least 10 points eight times, and led the team in scoring twice. Finished with a career-high 19 points against Harvard, had a 12-point performance against ACC-opponent Georgia Tech and scored 10 points with five rebounds and four steals against SEC-foe and in-state rival LSU.

During her sophomore campaign, Davenport started 17 games, averaging 6.8 points per game and was third on the team with 132 rebounds, pulling down 4.6 per contest. She scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 16 points, and also had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Techsters were eliminated from the Conference USA Tournament in an overtime loss to Rice, despite a 15-point, eight-rebound outing by Davenport. She started the season with a 15-point, seven-rebound performance against Wisconsin.

A Dallas native, Davenport graduated from Duncanville High School. As a senior, she led the Lady Panthers to a 36-1 record, a district championship and earned TABC All-State, as well as Academic All-State accolades.
