Mays Begins First Season As Head Coach At Home Nov. 11

WBB Non-Conference Schedule Graphic 2016-17
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team opens the season Nov. 11 in Moody Coliseum against Texas State, one of six home games before the Mustangs begin the American Athletic Conference slate. Texas A&M, which finished ranked 18th in the final 2015-16 polls, highlights the list of opponents SMU will take on in Moody Coliseum, with the Mustangs and Aggies facing off on Dec. 5.

The schedule features road games at Kansas, TCU and New Mexico, as well as tournaments hosted by Colorado and Southern California. The Mustangs begin the tournament in Los Angeles with a rematch against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, who finished last season ranked No. 15/14, defeated the Mustangs 72-70 in Puerto Rico last year as the No. 10 team in the nation.

First-year head coach Travis Mays has added four transfers to the roster for the 2016-17 season, which features eight returners, including American Athletic Conference honorees McKenzie Adams and Alicia Froling. The Mustangs will also benefit from the addition of Klara Bradshaw, a transfer from TCU who came to SMU prior to the 2015-16 season, and the return of Kiara Perry, who missed last year due to injury. Perry averaged 7.9 points and led the Mustangs with 39 steals as a sophomore in 2014-15.

Adams was named The American Newcomer of the Year after leading SMU with 13.4 points per game with a team-high 76 assists. Froling was named to the all-conference team, finishing the year as one of just three players to average a double-double. The Australian scored 12.3 points per game with 10.6 rebounds. Stephanie Collins set an SMU single-season record with 73 blocks, and the Mustangs set a school-record as a team with 184 blocks.
