Can The American Rival The Big East?

The Big East is rocking again. Butler beats # 1 Villanova then Creighton beats Butler. Those aren't exactly household names in college football. Yet the Big East consistently puts out some of the best hoops in the country year after year.

I like the current round of coaching upgrades in the American.... but what is it going to take to get the American to THAT basketball level? Can it be done?

It would be tough to play up to that level. First the bottom of our conference is like C-USA mid level teams. Looking at the top though the AAC could get close if Tubby brings Memphis back and UConn finally figures out how not to suck the first half of a season (unlikely under Ollie). If those two are playing high level hoops with Us, Cincy, and usually Temple this conference is pretty dang good with the emergence of UH and possibly UCF. I think it could get close, adding a Witchita St as rumored would be a big step forward.

The conference has to be better than it is this year going forward. We are fighting to be ahead of the A10 this year.

What level do you think schools like DePaul are at?

The biggest issue for the American is UCONN. If UCONN played to its brand then our conference would have a much better perception. You can say that about Memphis and Temple as well, but UCONN really needs to step it up.

In theory there could be years where Memphis, Temple, UConn, Cincinnati, and us all have top 25 level talent and teams. That would be a pretty salty conference. We won't get that many teams into the top 25 even if the talent is there until the bottom half of the conference moves into the respectiability range. We need Tulsa, Houston and at least 1 other team to be able to beat all the minnows they play.

LOL. Visit the UCONN board some time. They blame their poor performance on being relegated to the AAC EVERY CHANCE THEY GET.
