Shake Milton Named To Wooden Award Preseason Top 50

LOS ANGELES (SMU) – Junior guard Shake Milton was one of 50 candidates named to the 2018 John R. Wooden Award watch list. The list of candidates for college basketball's national player of the year was compiled by a preseason poll of college basketball experts. Milton, the American Athletic Conference preseason player of the year, is also on the Naismith Trophy, Lute Olson and Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year award watch lists.

In the opening weekend of the season, he earned AAC Player of the Week honors after a career-high 28 points (7-18 FG, 4-12 3FG, 10-10 FT), with three rebounds and two steals in a 78-67 win over UMBC on Friday. Milton followed the season-opening performance with 24 points (7-13 FG, 4-7 3FG, 6-7 FT), four rebounds, two assists and a steal in an 83-65 victory over ULM. In the first two games, he hit 42.1 percent from three-point range (8-19) and 94.1 percent from the free-throw line (16-17).

As a sophomore, Milton was a member of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list and was selected All-AAC second team. He averaged 13.0 points (16th AAC), 4.5 assists (4th AAC) and 1.3 steals (10th AAC). He also had a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd AAC) while shooting 42.3 percent on threes (4th AAC).

Milton helped the Mustangs sweep the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs won a program-record 30 games (30-5) that included going 17-1 in conference play and 18-0 in Moody Coliseum. SMU finished No. 11 in the final Associated Press Top 25.

Milton is the second Mustang to be named to the Wooden Award watch list in the last four years. Nic Moore, the two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was named to the Preseason Top 50 in 2014-15 and 2015-16. The two-time All-American was selected to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 in 2015-16.
