Prediction for tonight?

Postby Pony_Fan » Sat Jan 31, 2004 12:21 pm

Boise only favored by 8pts? I think it will be 14-18 pts probably.

Tulsa is favored against Hawaii? strange.

Tulsa is favored because they actually have a home court advantage. Even in this off year, they draw 7-8,000 for every home game.

I'd like to think this SMU team is going to come out of it's funk eventually, so why not today? On the other hand, that 8 pts looks pretty tempting because unless things change, I expect another double digit loss.

CP, I just don't see this team coming out of their funk at all. I wish I was wrong but they've got nothing to play for...I don't think you've seen them in person this year but they already have very lackluster energy.

As for TUlsa, they did beat Rice handily and I didn't think about the 7-8k that show up every game. The game is on right now - www.kfve.com streaming. They do have a huge homecourt advantage. Since you like to talk about attendance, think about all the sports that Dallas has to offer vs. these college only towns.

Burn
Desperados
Cowboys
Rangers
Mavericks (usually scheduled the same nights as SMU)
Sidekicks
Stars
Theatre, Opera, Charity events, etc..

Back in your day I am sure SMU was one of the only tickets in town.

As I alluded to in a previous post, the Mavericks are what really hurt SMU BB attendance. It is probably one of the main reasons I am not a Maverick fan, or a fan of the NBA until the playoffs.

But even in today's circumstances, Moody could still regularly rock with consistently entertaining, winning basketball. We have yet to provide that product.

Dallas is plenty big enough to support both SMU and the Mavericks. The difference is the Mavs put an entertaining product on the court. Also, SMU has a serious "image" problem in Dallas. Much too "elite" for the average Joe to identify with, but winning and playing at a top 25 caliber would certainly bring people out. That was proven in the 80's when the we drew well despite the Mavs.

I agree with Charleston -- the funk ends tonight, and the Dement-must-go faction loses ammo.

CP, that was exactly my point...exciting, winning basketball could do it. We just haven't seen it.

Also, pre-Mavericks we didn't have to be wonderful to draw decent to better than decent crowds.
