By the way they significantly shrunk their building. Was talking to some UT guys who know and said they defiantly noticed Moody and how the smaller building helped energy on the court.

Many in Arkansas complain that their 18,000 seat capacity Walton Center that replaced Barnhill caused a loss of energy. I am not sure how many seats were in Barnhill but apparently it was a cramped, low ceiling structure that allowed for maximum noise which they no longer get.

I'd like for some who attended games regularly in the on campus facility that SMU had before Moody to weigh in on this.

Plenty of examples in college hoops where "bigger" has not turned out to be better. Duke is a great example of a program that could sell a lot more tickets if Cameron Indoor was expanded but Coach K has come out pretty strong against any changes to their arena, which is pretty much the same as the old Moody was.

You said plenty of examples but you only listed one which was Duke. Could you name several more? I am not saying you are wrong but you need to increase the sample amount to infer plenty.

Gallagher Iba Arena in stillwater
went from a 4h barn that sat 6300 to a building that seats 136000.

many osu fans even admit it was a horrible mistake
Horrible renovation.

agree on Gallagher-Iba as I lived in OKC and attended a couple of OSU games in the old G-I "shoe box". Citing other places I've lived, South Carolina was another program that expanded from 10k to 16k and ruined their atmosphere on most nights. On a smaller scale, College of Charleston went from 3500 to 5100 and significantly changed their atmosphere. Small and noisy is the classic "snake pit" in college hoops. I love that we reduced the size of Moody as it was way overdue.

He actually just gave a counter-example, not even an example. But you need look no further than every other member of the "Big Four" in North Carolina to see examples of regrets (which admittedly are subjective and YMMV):
* UNC's Carmichael Auditorium (still used by the women) was very much like Cameron, and they do not get the same energy in the Dean Dome--there were no "wine and cheese" complaints about UNC crowds in Carmichael;
* NC State's Reynolds Coliseum (also still used by the women) was actually built using the Cameron blueprints, but then enlarged in a weird way mid-construction--still, it was an old-school barn and lots of people there miss the energy now that they are in a soulless professional arena that they share with an NHL franchise; and
* Wake Forest's [whatever--I don't care and I'm not going to look it up], which had to have been better than their current, too-big place, which does nothing for Wake other than allow plenty of Deacon home games to be overtaken by visitors (UNC especially, but also Duke and NCSU sometimes).

Correct. Remember Coach Doh mentioning this as well and saying current building codes would prevent another duplicate of Cameron or Moody from being built.

Never was crazy about Ford. At its opening I gave it a C+. Moody on the other hand has always been a crown jewel on this campus. It doesn't get much better than Moody Coliseum & Crum.

Syracuse went from the 9,500 seat Manley Field house to the 33,000 seat carrier dome in 1980. Record crowd for a basketball game was 35,446. Average attendance in 2015-2016 was 26,253. Not sure they will be going back to a cozy field house anytime soon.
