Eight games in January..... predict!

It looks like SMU has a fairly easy January schedule-wise. There is only one game on the map with what I consider to be the top four teams (Cincy, UH, UCF, Temple) and that’s a home game.

It is entirely possible to be 7-1 on February 1.

I’m thinking more like 5-3.

Predictions please.

5-3 looks like a pretty good guess. Team is playing better so I think 6-2 is possible, but I have to see how they look in these next 2 road games before getting overly optimistic. UConn, Tulsa, Memphis and possibly WSU are all teams in the same category as SMU, i.e., hoping to finish in the top 4 in the AAC and get the 1st round tourney bye. I think we lose to Houston and go 2-2 against the above mentioned four. Let's just take care of business in New Orleans!

I think SMU and Tulsa and possibly USF are better than UCONN and Memphis. I’m hopeful we finish the season in third or fourth place in the league but think fifth or sixth is probably more realistic. We will learn a lot from the Tulsa and Houston games.

7-1 would put us on path for the NCAA and have us in contention for a conference title run. It would mean three wins from @UConn, @WSU, @Memphis or Home against Houston.

4-4 would probably meet external expectations (Vegas). For the rest of conference play, we would need to split against Cincy, win @Houston, and win all the other games to have any shot at the tourney. An injury or two are bound to happen at some point with a thin team, so going on that type of run will be a challenge.

So, 4-4 puts us in a bind. Anything less than that would be a disaster..

5-3 should probably be the hope or expectation. But we would still need to go on a hell of a run at the end of the year to make the NCAA.

With the schedule that Jank assembled (and the bad losses that came with it), the only way we are on a path for the NCAA is to win the conference tournament.

4 wins max; most likely 3.

ECU HOME - Win
TULANE AWAY - Win
UCONN AWAY - Loss
TULSA HOME - Loss
HOUSTON HOME - Loss
MEMPHIS AWAY - Loss
TULANE HOME - Win
WSU AWAY - Loss

I guess I see 3-5. Maybe we go 1-1 with Memphis and WSU to make it 4-4.

I would guess 6-2, but I could see 5-3 or 7-1.

I agree. Tulane home and away, UCONN, Tulsa are must wins. We should split Wichita State and Memphis. Houston is a likely loss, but the type of game we need to win if we are to be the type of program we have been and expect.

Frankly I think the odds of beating Houston at home are about the same as beating UCONN or Memphis on the road.

5-3, losing to UH at home and either UCONN, WSU away or Tulsa at home.

I think Georgetown is better than UCONN and we managed to beat them on the road so that is why I am optimistic about that game. I really don't know how good Memphis is given that they played a tough non-conference schedule but did not beat anybody. I know that beating Houston will be very tough as they are as good as we were at our peak.
