Jimmy Whitt

He has really turned out to be a terrific PG for this team, now averaging 12.5 ppg while hitting almost 54% of his FGs, but more important, he has dished out 56 assists vs only 16 turnovers. Don't remember if we've EVER had a PG with a better than 3:1 assist:turnover ratio in this program. He's also 3rd on the team in rebounding with more than 6 rpg and has 23 steals in 13 games. If he was a better FT and 3-point shooter, Whitt would be talked about as one of the best PG in college hoops.

Meanwhile, the guy with the next best assist:turnover ratio is a bit of a surprise. In limited minutes, it is C.J. White at 12:6 and right behind him is Nat Dixon with 22:13.

I agree. He has really stepped up his game, and he is one of the few that still shoot the short jump shot well.

So far I think he is the MVP on the team, with McMurray close behind.

Best mid range shot in college basketball and he can defend. I see why LB loved him. If any NBA team needs a mid range shooter he will be in the league when time comes.

LB loves a guy that can drive to the rim. At least That's what he told ojo at practice when he was shooting jump shots " anybody can do that, I need someone that can drive to the rim "

I miss that man.

I like how the Musers described him last year - an old school, 1970's ABA point guard. Long, athletic, can jump, great defense, plays defense and that mid-range game.

I'm not sure if the NBA is looking for that now, but if they ever make Semi Pro 2, he would be a great fit.

After going 4-13 vs Tulane, Whitt is no longer the leader in FG percentage. That spot belongs to Feron Hunt now, but Whitt still had a major impact on this game with 11 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals...along with a couple of much needed FTs down the stretch to put this one away

Whitt and McMurray are not your traditional backcourt for sure. That’s got to be a bit difficult to prepare for. I’ll be interested to see how they handle a decent zone defense. Havent seen that in awhile.

With Foster still working his way back tp 100%, is it safe to say Whitt is thre best and most valuable player on the team?

I think he is.

Hard to say Whitt alone is MVP...maybe Whitt and McMurray share that honor. Have to remember that most of Whitt's assists have set up McMurray who hits FGs at a pretty high percentage...and I still want the ball in McMurray's hands when our opponents need to foul to keep the game alive.

That's funny. And a bit scrawny. Great description.

Whitt has "entered" the NBA draft but has he also entered the NCAA Transfer Portal or is there still a chance he returns to SMU for a Senior season? Going to be interesting to see how everything plays out and what next year's roster looks like.

I have not seen anything indicating he entered the transfer portal. I would love to have him back and pair him with Admon Gilder. If he doesn’t come back I really hope he goes pro so that we get credit for him as a pro.

Can we put him coming back to rest now?

Per Jon Rothstein:

PSA: Under new NBA Draft rules, players are allowed to retain an agent to guide them through the process and then terminate them later on if they wish to return to school.

What does that mean?

There won't be significant clarity to who will be back for 19-20 until late May
