Firing Matt Doherty

Postby PonyPlayer4 » Wed Feb 13, 2019 9:24 am

Matt Doherty's win % in the last two seasons before he was fired: 49.25%

10-11 record of 20-15
11-12 record of 13-19

Robodoh was something else.

Jankovich is on pace for a 45.3% win rate his last 2 seasons.
17-16 record of 17-16
18-19 record of 12-19

Doherty out performed Jank on the court and was fired. Doherty also recruited significantly more talented players to SMU than Timmy has done. Jank has even said he loathes recruiting, and it is the worst part of the job. How is this man still here?

Fire Jank.

Don't forget we finished last season with a 3-10 run (with two of those wins against ECU) and very well could finish this season with 12 straight losses.

LBs biggest mistake was Tankovich as assistant coach. Yes we wouldn’t of had Nic but this is simply not worth that.

Blame Bill Self. Timmy Yank was highly recommended to LB by Bill Self.

In fairness Nic Moore was a huge part of our success. And by at least some accounts Jank was a positive influence on the coaching staff during LBs time (recall we performed very well when Jank took the reigns during LB's suspension). My point is that, like with everything, Jank has not/is not all bad. Has he been successful keeping the momentum of the program? No. Would someone else of a similar ilk been able to maintain the success against the backdrop of sanctions? I don't know but I think it is entirely possible that, short of another big investment head coach hiring, we would be more or less where we are, perhaps 3-4 spots higher in the conference. And if we we 4th or 5th in the AAC would we still be the darlings of the DFW sports scene? No.

I don't think there is any way to argue that firing Jank is not justified. We are not where we were and we appear to be trending down. But is anyone that we can afford going to be able to fix it?

IIRC LB was not inexpensive. If we want to play with the big boys and be successful then we will have to step up and pay for a top notch, well known, first class coach who and recruit and win.

IMO part of LB's success in recruiting was his name and the fact he could help players get to the NBA. We need the same type of coach now without some of the baggage LB had.

If we aren't willing to step up and do it right then maybe we should drop down to DII where we might be competitive.

Nobody was worse than Doh. He had back to back 20 loss seasons; padded his schedule with teams like Paul Quinn, FL Gulf Coast, Occidental, Houston Baptist, etc., and his last year he had Samarrippas starting at PG.

Doh absolutely padded his schedule, but he actually won the games! If Jank didn't pad his schedule, we would be in the single digit wins this year! Thank you for pointing out another great point.

Doh recruited high character individuals, he just couldn't coach them. Jeremiah Samarrippas did not know when to quit, gave his all, and is still engaged with the sport.

Doh also lost to Jackson St, UC Riverside and Oral Roberts but as someone posted he didn’t have many of the recruiting benefits that Jank does - a quality AAC schedule, a beautiful renovated arena, a much bigger budget and better staff, all games on the ESPN family and recent success of the program. There is no doubt Doh was a MUCH better recruiter than Jank.
