Basketball Eligibility

Postby Maryland78 » Thu Aug 08, 2019 11:47 am

Someone please help me out with who is actually eligible on the basketball team? There are 17 players listed on the roster on SMU's athletic website. My understanding is/was that you are allowed 13 scholarships and two walk-on's for a total of 15 on a roster. Even if a couple of the transfers are not eligible this season, how can you have 17 guys listed on the roster? Just say'n...

That being said, looks like the team has some potential this year, if a couple/three of the players really breakout!

Getting any information out of Jankistan isnt easy these days...nobody seems to know. But your 13 scholarship number and your 15 roster numbers are accurate. There’s talk that Bryce Cook will be “medically unable to play.” He’ll get to kerp a scholarship but it won’t count against our 13. So it seems we still need to lose somebody else. It has been speculated that Jahmar Young might go from scholarship to walk on as he was ready to walk on last year but was awarded a scholarship simply because Jank couldn’t find anyone else to give it to. But again, that is someone else’s best guess.

I guess we’ll find out eventually.

Do our peer schools like Duke and Villanova operate like this?

Obviously not. But let’s watch and see how Vanderbilt does. Their program is almost as unsuccessful as ours right now. They’ve moved on and will attempt to get back to respectability.... in a much tougher conference. They have some solid young guys. We’ll get them the next two years so it will be a good comparison. After we look better than them maybe then we can think about the Dukes and the Novas.

I understand they have some incoming talent. But per Sagarin, Vandy finished at least 30 slots below us the last two seasons.

Vanderbilt did not win an SEC conference game last year but played almost every team close including Kentucky. They were able to find a way to lose games in the last minute. They are not a walk over.

I believe there is no limit on the amount of walk-ons you can have on the roster, simply that only 15 total players including scholarship and walk-ons can dress for games.

Quick reminder of what a joke Jank is: he spent two full seasons making [deleted] excuses about sanctions and not having enough players, and any hope for this season to not be a total disaster is riding on the NCAA bailing us out and granting waivers for Davis and McNeill to be immediately eligible. Meanwhile, Jank kept two guards on the end of the bench who have no business being on a high major roster (are we even considered HM anymore?).

Hopefully this will be the last season that I have to b & moan about what a clown loser fraud Tim Jankovich is. He’s an entitled, lazy, arrogant LOSER.

Was thinking the same thing, i.e. "tell us how you really feel, East". Meanwhile, I thought Davis sitting this year was already a foregone conclusion. Need to hope Jolly can run the point for this team.

I heard both he and McNeill have applied for waivers, but their chances are both iffy. Only someone as stupid and lazy as Jank would leave us at the mercy of the NCAA and not bring in other talented guards who can 100% play right away to upgrade the talent level. Maybe Bandoumel can play but JUCOs are always iffy propositions and his offer list wasn’t exactly stellar. The freshman from Atlanta may end up being a good player but I wouldn’t expect a ton out of him as a true freshman. Meanwhile there are two other guards taking up scholarship space on this roster who have no business being here and yet Jank made no effort whatsoever to run them off and upgrade the roster as a competent coach would do. The self-imposed Janktions are still in effect, folks!
