Mustangs Fall On Road To Temple

PHILADELPHIA (SMU) – SMU Women's Basketball fell on the road to Temple on Saturday afternoon, 85-62, inside McGonigle Hall.

Strong first and third quarters by Temple, proved to be the difference in the game as Temple extended their winning streak to four and the Mustangs fell to 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs were led in scoring and rebounding by Johnasia Cash, who finished with 15 points and seven boards. Cash was a perfect 5-of-5 at the line.

Temple (10-6, 3-1) jumped out to a large lead with a dominant first quarter. They held a 22-point edge after keeping the Mustangs to five points in the first 10 minutes of play.

SMU (7-8, 1-2) owned the second quarter. The Mustangs quickly opened the quarter with a 7-0 run. They finished the quarter hitting 50% from the field and holding the Owls to 21%. The Mustang defense forced six turnovers leading to nine points in the period. By the break, the Mustangs had cut the lead in half to trail by 11 at the half.

Temple grabbed the momentum right back in the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs by 22 and extending the lead to 33. Temple did its damage inside the arc in the third, hitting 11-of-13 from short range in the session. The Mustangs scored 27 in the fourth quarter led by Johnasia Cash, who put 13 in the period.

Amber Bacon reached double-digit scoring for the eighth time this season as she scored 11 points with five boards and four assists.

Desirae Mathis had a strong performance coming off the bench in the second half. The freshman contributed five points, three assists and two steals in 11 minutes of court time.

Temple was led by the combo of Mia Davis and Marissa Mackins. The duo both scored 20+ with Davis recording a double-double.

Next on the slate, the Mustangs return to their home floor to face Temple on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
