What a great win!

Postby JasonB » Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:23 pm

That was a fantastic comeback and win by the Mustangs.

We have all been critical of Jank, but he did a great job of coaching in this game. We all need to get behind this team now that they are inching closer to the top of conference.

Three things to watch moving forward:

1) As mentioned by the announcers, to change to having Mike run the pick and role with Davis (instead of Ethan or Jasey) had a massive impact. That could be a big adjustment made as we move forward.

2)Something to keep your eye on - the Mustangs were much more disciplined on offense in the second half, moving away from quick threes and getting the ball down low in the post... and it happened to be in front of Jank. I don't think it is a coincidence. I bet as we continue to watch the team over the course of the season, their offensive efficiency is much better when they are next to our bench and Jank is ordering plays than when it is on the opposite end. As the team (especially Davis) gets more comfortable, hopefully they will start executing better when the basket is on the other end. There is definitely a lack of experience thing going on with this.

3) Continued the deep rotation today, with second half minutes for White and Smith. Smith looked very smooth in the first half and active on defense. He is going to jump White in the rotation at some point this year. The light has come on a little bit. That deeper rotation allows Jolly and Davis to be fresh late in the game, really important.

Big win for the Mustangs, hopefully we can keep it up!

We really need a backup PG to spot Davis. Will be great to have both Davis and McNeill next year. Hunt needs to mature and get the message that his D is just as important as throwing down highlight dunks. Bandoumel started slowly but had a pretty good bounce back game and he was a very important piece of this win. Davis is a great closer...just like little Nic and butch Moore back in the day. Just put the ball in his hands at crunch time.

CJ was less painful tonight than he was against ECU. But yes, it would be nice to have more effectiveness there off the benc.

GO INSIDE! Stat of the game:

SMU from 3: 11-34
SMU from 2: 14-20.

Balanced it out a lot more in the second half, and that was a huge difference in the game.

Good points Jason. I havent had a chance to watch this one yet but those changes in minutes in the box score for Jasey, Band, Chaggy and Hunt are wild.

A win at Cincy with this lineup and rotation and Jank becomes Dean f-kin Smith.

A couple of other comments:

1) Jank clearly indicated to yesterday's announcers that the reason for the lineup change was defense. Jasey is more effective defensively than Ethan, and Band over Hunt. We have all expresed concerns that Jank prefers offense over defense, so that is great to hear.

2) If you guys remember, Nic sat out and had a ton of practice time with the team before playing under LB. Even so, that first year with LB was rough. Lots of fast break turnovers and lots of sideline arguements. Lots of inconsistancy on offense when he didn't do exactly what LB wanted him to. Year 1 was good, year 2 was awesome. So, don't forget that Davis has only been on campus a few months. There are going to be issues this year with running the offense. Especially when the offensive side is away from our sideline. It should get a lot better and a lot more consistent next season. But don't write off the inexperience factor and blame it all on Jank - LB had the same problems.

3) Speaking of PG, we haven't had one since Nic. Whitt was a convert, Shake was a convert - both hybrid guards forced to play the point. CJ and Jolly are in that same bucket. The swing and miss in that regard started under LB with Sed and Mudiay, and continued under Jank with the guards he recruited. The 2021 class needs to include an elite point guard who can sit for one year under Davis before taking over. But the lack of a great PG before Davis showed up is not only something caused by Jank's recruiting. LB bears the brunt of some of that as well.

Huh? Technically we scored more points with the 3 (33 to 28) although it was a lower %. I think the stat(s) of the game were performance in the second half where we made a higher percentage of shots regardless if it was a 2 or a 3, we had fewer turnovers, and they didn't score anything during our run to end the game. Have to give some of that credit to Jank and staff - we all know if the half's had been reversed (up 4 at the half, lose by 9 missing a lot of 3's) this board would have been all over him.

This is a quality road win. Memphis isn’t as good we thought which was obvious after the 40 point loss earlier in the week to Tulsa, but they still have plenty of talent.

I doubt many top PGs are even going to give SMU a look in recruiting for 2 more years. A top PG isn't going to want to waste a year or 2 sitting on the bench behind Davis who has 2 more years after this

Those are our shooting numbers. We shot under 30% from 3. From 2 we shot 70%. Plus drew fouls on top of it.

That is why I said 2021. They would play (or sit out after a transfer) during Davis' senior year.

Five of the next 11 games are against teams with equal or better records in the AAC than us (at this point). Another game with Memphis makes 6 difficult games left. We have 3 of those games at home.

We don't beat Memphis in Memphis very often. We have them at home. NOt a give me but not shaky either.

Cincy, Tulsa and one game with Tulane are on the road. All equal or better than us in standings.

Oh, and UCF and USF are on the road to end the season.

We only have 5 of the next 11 games at home.

We have done well but one might argue the real heart of the schedule, where it counts, is in front of us.

This will be a challenge and I for one look forward to how tis team handles it.

Tuesday is a big game for both team since both SMU and Cinci are pretty much bubble teams at this point. Whoever wins will gain a huge advantage especially us since we only get Cinci once this year.

Are we seriously talking possible Dance? Remarkable given the gloom and doom on here this year.

With our SOS, I don't think we're Dance-worthy unless we pretty much run the remainder of our schedule.
