Greatest Center in SMU history?

Postby EastStang » Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:05 am

My nomination is Ira Terrell. Perhaps someone who saw Jim Krebs can weigh in on him.

Krebs was before my time but obviously a great player in his era. IT was dominant as well but I always saw him as more of a power forward than a center. Both Krebs and IT were counted on as offensive contributors so they get bonus points. Jon Koncak has to be in this discussion and was a true center who played against Akeem Olajuwon and Joe Klein during his years at SMU and went on to have the longest NBA career of the three. Koncak wasn't a primary scoring option in his years at SMU but he did a great job of blocking the paint and clearing the boards. Would love to have just one guy anywhere as near as capable as those three on next year's team!

Can't believe I forgot Koncak. I still think of him as an NBA power forward. Forgot that he played center in college against Olajuwon, Joe Klein, etc.

Of course Krebs went toe to toe with Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell.

Krebs for play, Koncak for being responsible for the beginning of outrageous salaries being paid. I think he got something like a 10 million dollar contract which was not the norm at the time.

I never got to see Krebs.
The best I ever saw was Koncak.

What's an SMU center?

I do remember seeing Koncak. He was enormous out there.

I was at SMU with Krebs. The man was unstoppable on offense. Wilt Chamberlain couldn't do it nor could anyone else. I seem to recall my freshman year (when we went to the final 4) he scored 50 points when we played in the old Natatorium. He is the only SMU player to ever appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Krebs all the way!
Long live Inez Perez!
